COMMUNITY CONNECTIONS: Never underestimate the value of childhood dreams

Writing has always been my passion. Even when I was a teenager, I was convinced that I was going to write the Great American Novel.

?Catcher in the what?? future generations would question. Oh, the guilt I would feel having knocked J.D. Salinger's classic (and my personal favorite) book off of required reading lists across the country. There is only so much room at the top, after all.

All I needed was something to write with. Most publishing houses, as far as I knew, didn't accept Great American Novels written on spiral notebooks with No. 2 pencils.

One afternoon, my mother surprised me with the unexpected gift of a home computer. She beamed with excitement as she unveiled it atop our kitchen table, complete with 1 megabyte of RAM and dual 5 1/4-inch floppy disk drives. The hard drive was as big as a '57 Chevy and hummed just as loud. It was the premiere piece of technology in 1984.

The only problem was that it was the year 2000, and most kids my age were already using their computers to download songs from Napster. This computer didn't have any programs like Napster. In fact, it didn't even have a home screen. When you booted it up, all you saw was a small blinking vertical bar, egging you to start your first sentence on an unnamed word processor.

None of that mattered to me though. At the time we couldn't have afforded a Giga Pet, much less a new computer. However my mother, well aware of my writing dreams, saw this hunk of junk at a yard sale and seized the opportunity. At least I had my dot-matrix printer. Sure you had to tear off the edges of the side of the paper and my finished products looked more like a scroll than a manuscript, but I couldn't have been happier.

My mom was always the biggest supporter of my dreams. I could have said that I wanted to be a Rock Star, and I'm sure I would've come home one day and found a slightly used ukulele on the kitchen table.

Getting the opportunity to chase your dreams, regardless of how impractical they are, are paramount moments in a child's development. Luckily, there are enough adults out there who appreciate the value of a childhood dream.

There are theater teachers who direct local plays featuring future Academy Award nominees, and Tiny Tutus community class instructors who teach little ballerina's their first dance steps, which will ultimately no doubt prepare them for their Broadway debut in ?Swan Lake.?

For any kid who ever watched a basketball game and wanted to ?Be like Mike,? there are more than 60 volunteer coaches in the Hoopsters Youth Basketball Program waiting to teach them the fundamentals of the game. That's nearly 600 championship rings for Eureka youth alone that the NBA is going to have to pony up for.

Sure there's a chance that not every kid whose family signs them up for an art class is going to see their work hung at MoMA, but that's not really what matters. The important thing is that children learn there are people in their life who believe in them, which in turn gives them the confidence to believe in themselves -- the effects of which will long outlive their desire to become Eureka's first superhero.

As for me, my own dreams have evolved and I'm constantly adding more to the list; but at least now I'm equipped with the right tools to chase them down. These days I write on a Google Chromebook laptop (much smaller than a '57 Chevy), and spend my time finding inspiration in the community for a column that wouldn't even exist if not for that hunk of junk computer, purchased at a yard sale so long ago.

BBC News - Gorkha strike disrupts life in India's Darjeeling hills

This is only the beginning for you India.

BRICs are showing signs of a slow down.

You mention you want to build a wall on the border with us?

How about you think about building that wall around Kashmir where the militants are just itching for you to complete the railway tracks so they can jump on a train and take some revenge.

India will implode from within in the next 30 years.

'Conjuring' home residents can't conjure privacy

Movies

"The Conjuring," which topped last week's box office, was called "too scary" by some critics, who noted that the haunted-house film was given its R rating by the MPAA not for gore or language, but for pure fear potential. Now it's become a real-life horror for the family who lives in the Harrisville, R.I., home that inspired the movie.

Norma Sutcliffe, who said she is in her 60s, told Jim Baron of the Rhode Island newspaper The Woonsocket Call that fans of the film have been making pilgrimages to her home. The visits are disturbing her and her 70-year-old husband, who isn't in good health, she said.

Warner Bros.

"The Conjuring" is supposedly based on true events.

?We haven?t slept in days,? Sutcliffe told the newspaper. ?Because we wake up at 2 in the morning (and) there are people with flashlights in our yard.? People call on the phone and ask, 'Is this ?The Conjuring? house?' "

The Sutcliffes bought the house 25 years ago from the Perrons, the family depicted in the film, The Call reported. Andrea Perron wrote a trilogy of books about the supposed haunting of the house.

Sutcliffe said she received no money from the moviemakers and is angry they distributed photos of her house, making it easy for fans to find her address. A lawyer has told her she probably has no case to sue, and she said she doesn't want money, just to be left alone.

Sutcliffe told The Call she has seen the movie and doesn't think much of it. ?I just laughed at the whole thing," she told the paper. "I thought it was so ironically ridiculous. I thought it was an insult to the Perrons.?

Falklands set rules for oil and gas development, to the benefit of Islanders current and future generations

At its meeting of 24th July 2013, Executive Council agreed an overarching set of policy principles for hydrocarbons developments in the Islands. The policy statements capture the core principles that will govern the development of an oil and gas industry in the Islands and how the benefits of the industry will be managed.

?Hydrocarbons in Falklands? waters belong to the people of the Falkland Islands and their exploitation must be to the benefit of the people of the Falkland Islands, both those of today and future generations?, points out the statement released by the Executive Council.
?

The document provides a strong message to the hydrocarbons industry as to what is expected of them, and provides a clear statement of intent to the local community with regards to how revenues will be managed. The eight policies are as follows:

1. Hydrocarbons in Falkland Islands waters belong to the people of the Falkland Islands and their exploitation must be to the benefit of the people of the Falkland Islands, both those of today and future generations.

2. The Falkland Islands Government will maintain constant supervision and control over all hydrocarbon activities within the Falkland Islands Designated Area.

3. Petroleum discoveries must be efficiently managed and exploited to maximise economic recovery and to ensure the development of a long-term industry presence that will benefit the Islands for decades to come.
?

4. Development of the hydrocarbons industry must ensure the protection and conservation of the Falkland Island?s environment and biodiversity.

5. Development of the hydrocarbons industry must take into consideration existing commercial activity and promote the development of local business capacity.
?

6. The exploitation of finite natural resources will be used to develop lasting benefits to society across the whole of the Falkland Islands.
?

7. Transparency and accountability must be present throughout the hydrocarbon development process from all parties involved.
?

8. The Falkland Islands will only consider onshore hydrocarbon facilities if they are considered to be in the best interests of the Falkland Islands, and can be proven to satisfy all of the above policy goals.
?

(AP) ? Declaring he "must become a better person," San Diego Mayor Bob Filner said Friday he will undergo two weeks of counseling after a series of women claimed he made unwanted sexual advances that included groping, kissing and offensive comments.

The announcement did little to stifle widespread calls for the former congressman to resign and further plunged the nation's eighth-largest city into political turmoil.

"Words alone are not enough," Filner said at a nationally televised news conference. "I am responsible for my conduct and I must take responsibility for my conduct so that such conduct does not ever happen again."

Filner said he will receive twice-a-day briefings about city operations while participating full-time in what he described as "intensive therapy" beginning Aug. 5. He said he would return on Aug. 19 and focus on "doing right by the city in terms of being the best mayor I can be, and the best person I must be."

He said the two-week stint will be part of a continuing program that involves ongoing counseling. City Attorney Jan Goldsmith said Filner, not the city, will pay for the therapy.

Filner, who is 70 and divorced, did not take any questions after the announcement.

Several people who have called on Filner to resign said his plan for therapy was inadequate and reiterated calls for the Democrat to step down.

"Two weeks of therapy may help Bob Filner with his personal problems, but it does not help to address the needs of San Diego," said Laura Fink, a political consultant who alleges that Filner patted her buttocks at a 2005 fundraiser when she was deputy campaign manager for the then-congressman.

Kevin Faulconer, a Republican city councilman, said Filner's "bad behavior" will not end after two weeks of therapy.

"Bob Filner should leave to receive the help he obviously needs, but he shouldn't take the office of the mayor and San Diego city government with him." Faulconer said. "He needs to resign and seek long-term treatment as a private citizen."

Another Republican city councilwoman, Lorie Zapf, said Filner's refusal to step down was "an insult to women everywhere." And Todd Gloria, the Democratic City Council president who would become acting mayor if Filner resigned, said the mayor was prolonging a "civic nightmare."

"The mayor has finally acknowledged his very serious disorder which prevents his ability to govern and seriously affects his ability to interact with people," Gloria said.

Filner was served with a subpoena Friday to address allegations in a lawsuit filed against him and the city by his former communications director, Irene McCormack Jackson, who claims the mayor asked her to work without panties, demanded kisses, told her he wanted to see her naked and dragged her in a headlock while whispering in her ear.

Filner will answer questions under oath on Aug. 9, said Goldsmith, whose office served the subpoena as the mayor left a regional planning agency meeting.

"We have a bunch of questions," Goldsmith said. "Our goal is to get to the heart of it as quickly as possible."

During his absence from City Hall, the mayor will keep his full authority, which includes overseeing parks, roads, libraries and other services along with signing legislation, Goldsmith said.

The former congressman is San Diego's first Democratic mayor in 20 years, and he is less than eight months into a four-year term.

When the allegations first surfaced two weeks ago, Filner apologized for disrespecting women and said he needed help. But soon after, he said he was innocent of sexual harassment and resisted calls to leave office.

Filner disclosed his plans hours after the chairwoman of the Democratic National Committee called on him to resign, as did leaders of the San Diego Democratic party, after seven women identified themselves as targets of his sexual harassment.

DNC Chairwoman Debbie Wasserman Schultz called Filner's alleged behavior "reprehensible and indefensible."

Francine Busby, chairwoman of the local Democratic Party, said, "We are not here to determine guilt or innocence. However, in the best interest of the city, the San Diego County Democratic Party has voted to ask Mayor Filner to step down, seek the personal help that he needs, and allow San Diego to move forward."

Veronica "Ronne" Froman, a retired rear admiral, said Filner once blocked a doorway after others left a meeting, ran his finger up her cheek and asked if she had a man in her life.

Froman, who is known in San Diego as the "Navy Mayor" and has led the American Red Cross local chapter, said the incident occurred a couple years ago at Filner's congressional office.

Sharon Bernie-Cloward, president of the San Diego Port Tenants Association, said the then-congressman told her at an event in 2010 that she was beautiful and he wanted to date her after his re-election. At another event last year during the mayoral campaign, she said Filner "groped me on my backside inappropriately."

"I was left there startled and fearful. In fact, I actually had someone walk me to my car that night," she said.

Patti Roscoe, a businesswoman in the tourism and hospitality industry who knew Filner before he was elected to Congress in 1992, said Filner placed her in a "headlock" numerous times and tried to kiss her on the lips.

"I'd have to squirm to get away. And just as recently as a few months ago this happened. I turned and he just slobbered down my chin," Roscoe said.

Judge delays conservatorship ruling for actress Amanda Bynes

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - A judge in Southern California on Friday has postponed ruling on whether the parents of troubled actress Amanda Bynes should be granted legal control over the former teenage star's affairs.

Ventura County Superior Court Judge Glen Reiser pushed back the hearing to August 9 because Bynes, 27, is under court-ordered psychiatric care for the next two weeks, according to a court official.

Her parents have asked the court to grant them conservatorship after Bynes allegedly started a small fire in the driveway of a home in the Los Angeles suburb of Thousand Oaks on Monday.

Ventura County Sheriff deputies immediately placed the former teenage star of Nickelodeon series "All That" in involuntary psychiatric care at a local hospital.

Bynes was born in Thousand Oaks and grew up there. She starred in the films "What a Girl Wants," "She's the Man" and "Hairspray" but has made headlines over the past year for erratic behavior, legal problems and odd posts on Twitter.

Bynes, who is on probation in California for driving on a suspended license, faces charges in the state for allegedly driving under the influence and in New York for marijuana possession and throwing a glass bong out of her 36th-floor Manhattan apartment.

Pop singer Britney Spears was placed under conservatorship in 2008 following a personal meltdown and divorce. Her father and lawyer remain in control of her legal and financial affairs.

AP PHOTOS: Pope ventures into tough Rio shantytown

Pope Francis spent Thursday morning in one of Rio de Janeiro's most violent shantytowns, whose residents gave him a warm and happy greeting.

The pontiff mounted an open vehicle to cruise through the narrow streets of the Varginha slum past residents crowding the route under a sea of umbrellas. As he is fond of doing, Francis also got down and walked into the crowds to shake hands and talk with people.

Later in the day, the pope headed to Rio's famed Copacabana beach, to deliver an address to hundreds of thousands of young Roman Catholics attending the church's World Youth Day festival.

Here's a gallery of images from the fourth day of the pope' visit to Brazil.

At least 77 dead in one of Europe's worst rail disasters

CCTV video captured yesterday's train derailment in Spain that killed at least 77 people.

By Becky Bratu and Alastair Jamieson, NBC News

Security cameras captured the horrific moment when a speeding train derailed on a tight curve and smashed into a wall in Spain, killing at least 77 people and injuring 178, including 5 Americans.

The dramatic footage of one of Europe's worst rail disasters, obtained by Spanish newspaper El Pais, appeared to confirm reports that the train had been going too fast as it approached the city of Santiago de Compostela late Wednesday.

One the wrecked cars caught fire, while another slid up a grass embankment and came to rest next to a nearby road.

Images from the scene showed bodies covered in blankets and towels lying next to toppled and crushed carriages as rescuers worked to pull survivors out of broken windows.

"It was going so quickly. ... It seems that on a curve the train started to twist, and the wagons piled up one on top of the other," passenger Ricardo Montesco told Cadena Ser radio station, according to Reuters.

The driver - one of two in the cab at the time of the crash - has been put under formal investigation, a spokeswoman for Galicia's High Court told Reuters.?

Lavandeira Jr / EPA

Scores are killed and injured in a train derailment in NW Spain.

El Pais cited sources close to the investigation saying the driver stated immediately after the crash that he had been traveling at 118 mph on the curve, which had a speed limit of 49 mph.

Trapped in his wrecked cab, he reportedly told supervisors over the radio: ?"We're human! We're human," according to El Pais. "I hope there are no fatalities because they will fall on my conscience,"?he said, according to the newspaper?s source. NBC News was unable to immediately confirm the report.

Five U.S. citizens were among the injured, the State Department said in a statement. It said it had not received reports of any American fatalities but added that the situation "may change as we receive additional information."

There are reports of as many as 100 people wounded and doezens dead in a train derailment in northwestern Spain. NBC's Brian Williams reports.

All of the bodies had been removed from the wreckage by Thursday morning.

So many local residents lined up to donate blood that officials were forced to open additional donation points.

Spain's prime minister, Mariano Rajoy. declared three days of national mourning after visiting the site.

"The scene is shocking, it's Dante-esque," the head of Spain's Galicia region, Alberto Nunez Feijoo, said in a radio interview, according to Reuters.

Local health officials said 178 were injured, of which 95 were still in hospital, of whom 36 - including four children - were in a critical condition.

The crash, which happened at 8:41 p.m. local time (2:41 p.m. ET) Wednesday, was Europe?s deadliest mainline train accident in more than 25 years and Spain's worst in four decades.

It also cast a shadow of tragedy over the entire Galicia region, which had been due to celebrate a public holiday Thursday.

Santiago de Compostela had been preparing for the festival of Saint James, when thousands of Christian pilgrims from around the world pack the streets. It is likely the train was packed full with people traveling for the holiday.

Officials said all of the celebrations, including a traditional High Mass at the city?s centuries-old cathedral, were canceled.

Xoan Rey / EPA

A group of volunteers waiting to give blood to help those injured in the train accident close to Santiago de Compostela, Galicia, Wednesday.

The eight-car Alvia express train was traveling from the capital, Madrid, to the city of Ferrol when it derailed about two miles short of Santiago de Compostela station, national train operator Renfe said in a statement.

Spain?s rail network is one of the most modern and successful in Europe, following decades of public investment.

Transport expert and author Christian Wolmar said it was not clear if high-tech safety systems, which override inputs by the driver, would have been in use at the time.

?On high speed lines, the European Train Control System should automatically correct the speed of the train, but this accident may have happened on a stretch of line which is not designated as high-speed,? he said.

Rail workers? union SEMAF expressed ?support for the comrade who has been implicated in this accident? as well as ?condolences? to the victims, according to RTVE.

The crash is Spain?s biggest disaster since the 2004 terror attack at Madrid?s Atocha station that left 191 dead, and its worst train crash since 1972 when a collision left 86 dead.

In November 2000, 155 people were killed when a fire in a tunnel engulfed a funicular train packed with skiers in Austria.

In Montenegro, up to 46 people were killed and nearly 200 injured in 2006 when a packed train derailed and plunged into a ravine outside the capital, Podgorica.

Energy fact of the day: Eagle Ford Shale sets new oil output record in May, will likely surpass Bakken Shale next year

eaglefordshaleBloomberg is reporting this week that:

Oil production in Texas?s Eagle Ford shale formation rose 58% in May from the prior year. The nine fields that make up the majority of Eagle Ford yielded 581,923 barrels of crude a day (see chart above), according to preliminary data released by the Texas Railroad Commission, which oversees oil and gas drilling in the state. The fields produced 368,770 barrels daily in May 2012.

Growing production out of Eagle Ford is helping fuel a renaissance in Texas crude. The state produced a total of 2.45 million barrels a day in April, the highest monthly level since April 1985, according to the Energy Information Administration, the statistical arm of the Energy Department. The EIA hasn?t released May production data for the state.

With the typical monthly upward revisions of 30,000 to 50,000 barrels per day (bpd) by the Texas Railroad Commission that will be announced later, it?s very likely that May oil production in the Eagle Ford Shale surpassed 600,000 bpd for the first time, and actually increased by almost 70% over May last year (see reference here).

The chart above shows how phenomenal the rise of the Eagle Ford Shale play has been over the last several years. As recently as 2010, Eagle Ford Shale oil production was so inconsequential at only 15,000 barrels per day that it represented only about 1% of Texas?s oil output. Even in 2011, as shale oil?output in the Eagle Ford Shale started surging?and it produced an average of 129,000 barrels per day, that was still less than 9% of the Lone Star State?s annual oil output that year. But last year things started changing dramatically, as oil companies tapped into a gusher of shale oil in the Eagle Ford, and oil production there in 2012?represented 18% of the state?s total output. In April of this year, the Eagle Ford Shale accounted for almost 22% of the state?s total oil output, and more than 7% of all oil produced nationwide.

Bottom Line: If the current annual increases in Eagle Ford Shale oil production continue in the 50-70% range, which are now much higher than the 30-50% increases in Bakken Shale oil production this year, it?s likely that the Eagle Ford Shale will surpass oil output in the Bakken sometime in the second half of next year. But it?s also almost certain that oil production in both the Eagle Ford Shale and Bakken Shale formations will surpass one million barrels per day sometime in the second half of next year. For right now, given the phenomenal and ongoing increases in Eagle Ford oil output, I?m predicting that the Eagle Ford Shale will get to that important milestone of one million bpd first!

Nothing New, Too Much Left Out, in Obama's Speech

Yahoo asked Americans to respond to Barack Obama's speech on the economy on Wednesday and share whether their own lives match the president's words. Here's one perspective.

COMMENTARY | I'll never get back the hour I spent listening to President Obama chat about the economy at today's pep rally. I heard nothing new.

I'm a freelance consultant and writer in my 50s. Another family member is an electrical engineer working full-time on a job hunt after a layoff earlier this year. You want to see vulnerable Americans? Take a look at those of us in our 50s who are trying to land a job. Our town of Merrimack, N.H., is in decent economic shape with a new outlet mall. The mall hasn't replaced the jobs lost at the defense contractor down the street.

Our biggest economic choice as a family is to control our spending. That's how we get past layoffs, save for retirement, and set aside resources to share with our community. Washington should try that.

What bugged me in today's speech? Hearing the president call government expenditures "investments." Also, he called the sequester a "meat cleaver," when most of its cuts were to future spending increases.

"We expect people to be self-reliant," said the president, before listing ways that federal spending was necessary for housing, education, employment, retirement, and health care. He went so far as to advocate formal education for 4-year-olds as a "vital support system for working parents." He had no comment on helping stay-at-home parents, who are not yet obsolete.

He talked about Airbus building a facility in Alabama. He didn't mention Boeing, an American company that the Obama Administration attacked when it moved part of its business to South Carolina, a right-to-work state. I guess some high-paying manufacturing jobs are more equal than others.

When the President discussed Obamacare today, he left out that he's trying to use health care to trump the First Amendment via the HHS mandate.

And what "phony scandals" does he consider a "distraction" from the economy? Benghazi? Perhaps he meant the NSA revelations, which still haven't been explained to my satisfaction. When I mistrust executive actions in those areas, the president shouldn't be surprised when I am skeptical of trusting him with the economy.

Nexus 7 hands-on (2013) (update: video!)

New Nexus 7 handson

The Nexus 7 was a rather swell device when it was officially launched last year, and now we've had the opportunity to play with the next-gen version, which bumps the swellness factor a notch or two. The tablet, which boasts a 1080-quality display (1,920 x 1,200, to be precise) and Android 4.3 Jelly Bean, is being shown off after this morning's Breakfast with Sundar event -- which we suppose means we're now at brunch. We've grabbed a few images of the new tablet, seen below, and have added some early impressions after the break. Meet us there to see what we think.

Update: Hands-on video after the break!

PFT: Cruz thinks he took less than he deserves

brady-tebowGetty Images

Two years before they were teammates in New England, Tom Brady and Tim Tebow squared off twice on the field, with Brady winning each game handily.

After the first one, coming in December 2011 and at the height of Tebowmania, the two quarterbacks shared concerns about Aaron Hernandez and Brandon Spikes, who played with Tebow at the University of Florida and then with Brady on the Patriots.

?I?m trying to watch over Aaron and Brandon,? Brady says to Tebow in an NFL Films video, via the Orlando Sentinel.

?I appreciate that, too, man. They?re good guys,? Tebow says in response.

?[T]hey?re a lot to handle,? Brady adds.

While those concerns, along with Hernandez?s various red flags coming out of Gainesville, don?t project to murder, it shows that the Patriots knew or should have known that Hernandez had baggage before giving him a $12.5 million signing bonus in 2012. ?As Ben Volin of the Boston Globe pointed out earlier this month, Hernandez bristled when Patriots coaches and employees asked him to break free from his friends in Connecticut.

Despite those concerns, the Patriots signed him to a lucrative contract that he?ll never earn.

So while the Pats may have been ?duped? when it comes to whether Hernandez would kill another person in cold blood (allegedly), the team had reason to believe that something wasn?t completely right with a guy into whose pockets the Patriots stuffed millions of dollars.

Long-range nesting patterns reveal new habitats and risks

DAVIE, Fla.-- Threatened loggerhead sea turtles in the northern Gulf of Mexico can travel distances up to several hundred miles and visit offshore habitats between nesting events in a single season, taking them through waters impacted by oil and fishing industries.

Evidence from a U.S. Geological Survey study challenges the widely-held view that sea turtles remain near one beach throughout the nesting season and suggests the threatened species may require broader habitat protection to recover. The findings also cast new uncertainties on current estimates of the size of the species' Gulf of Mexico subpopulation.

"This is the first study to locate and quantify in-water habitat use by female loggerheads in the Northern Gulf of Mexico subpopulation during their reproductive periods," said lead author Kristen Hart, a USGS research ecologist. "Our tracking results show they depend on a much broader range of habitat during this critical part of their lives than was previously thought to be required."

The study reveals detailed loggerhead movements during "inter-nesting" periods, showing patterns that vary for individual turtles. Generally, this period begins when a female returns from open seas around May and lasts roughly until September. Up until now, efforts to protect the species generally centered on beaches with high nesting activity under the assumption that once turtles had nested on those beaches, they either remained in their immediate vicinity or migrated back out to sea.

"The satellite data and our observations on the ground tell the same story: loggerheads in this subpopulation nest at multiple beaches, sometimes hundreds of miles apart," said Hart. "Some of the females we captured and tagged on beaches in Alabama traveled over 250 miles to nest in Florida, where we recaptured them. Likewise, we also captured some females in Alabama that had previously been tagged at the Florida site in earlier breeding years."

Researchers used the same statistical technique for analyzing their movements that enabled them to pinpoint loggerhead feeding hotspots at sea last year and, more recently, locate Kemp's ridley feeding grounds in the Northern Gulf by differentiating between behavioral modes. They analyzed where 39 adult female sea turtles went after they nested on beaches in Alabama and Florida between 2010 and 2012 to learn where they spent time in the water during the breeding season before migrating back to sea.

"We were surprised to find a lot of variation in their behavior," said co-author and USGS biologist Meg Lamont. "On average, the tagged turtles visited areas about 33 kilometers (20 miles) from shore and moved about 28 kilometers (17 miles) to nest at another beach. Several of them journeyed more than 200 kilometers (124) miles to nest at additional beaches, while others simply cruised back out to sea after the first nest."

The results of the study explain a mystery that had puzzled Lamont, who has 16 years of data from the St. Joseph Peninsula in Florida showing that few of the nesting loggerheads they tagged returned to nest again on the Peninsula. "We didn't know whether they were dying or simply nesting elsewhere," explained Lamont, "Now we know they aren't as faithful to one nesting site as was once thought."

One of the turtles that Lamont tagged in 2002 appeared at Hart's site in Alabama, nearly a decade later. In fact, the researchers saw several turtles nesting both in Alabama and the St. Joseph Peninsula (roughly 250 miles apart) within a period of just two weeks.

"These data show it is not sufficient to just protect habitat around high density nesting beaches such as the St. Joseph Peninsula because many turtles that nest on the Peninsula use the entire region from the eastern Florida Panhandle to Louisiana," said Lamont.

There could also be fewer female loggerheads nesting in the northern Gulf of Mexico than current estimates suggest because they are calculated using nest numbers. "Our research shows that the same turtle could easily deposit eggs in Alabama and Florida if nests are separated by about 2 weeks," said Hart. "Population numbers based on nest counts may therefore be biased upwards if nests at the two sites were assumed to have come from two different females."

The study also noted that the areas the loggerheads used during the inter-nesting period overlapped with human uses, such as shrimp trawling and oil and gas platforms. A map showing sea turtle habitat use in relation to these activities can be found in the article, "Movements and Habitat-Use of Loggerhead Sea Turtles in the Northern Gulf of Mexico during the Reproductive Period," which was published July 3 in the journal PLOS ONE.

"We are working towards defining areas where sea turtles concentrate their activities at sea, effectively building a map of in-water turtle hotspots," said Hart. "The more we know about their habitat use, the more questions are raised about their behavior and ability to adapt. We hope to build a better understanding of how frequently turtles return to these same locations, and whether or not they move to new habitats when those locations are impacted. This type of information would be extremely valuable for developing management strategies to help in population recovery."

Cancer fighter one of scores evicted from Cheanuh Marina campground

Bill Mundie, 71, was already anticipating a tough month of chemotherapy treatments for his stomach and lung cancer.

But after receiving an eviction notice last week, he?s now looking for a new home, too.

Mundie is one of more than 125 residents of the Cheanuh Marina campground who received the notice Thursday evening from Beecher Bay First Nation, which owns the land on East Sooke Road, between East Sooke and Metchosin. Residents have been given 30 days to vacate their homes.

?It?s been a real slice, I?ve enjoyed myself here. I?really don?t want to move,? said Mundie, who has lived on the campground for 11?years and has been told he has between three and six months to live.

Most residents, including Mundie, said they don?t object to the eviction as much as they do the short notice.

They met Saturday afternoon, passing a hat to raise money for a lawyer and collecting 100 names on a petition calling for more time.

?I know the fact of the matter is, ?Yes, we have to go.? But it?s unrealistic to be able to move our homes in 30 days,? said Arlene Weatherell, who has lived on the property for seven years.

?Everyone?s quite emotional.?

Weatherell said she has knee surgery scheduled for Monday and has been told to rest for four to six weeks. Her common-law partner is also on disability.

?There?s a problem with packing, I?ll be recovering,? she said. ?And I have nowhere to go.?

Resident Owen Seeton, who has made $100,000 in improvements to his property in 2007 and 2008, said he won?t be able to move his trailer because of its size and the permanent structure attached.

And while residents were alerted with notices posted to their doors, several who rent property on the campsite but live off-site were not alerted. Andrew Slater called his mother, Judith Fagan-Cornell, in Ontario to let her know.

?Had it not been for me calling her, she wouldn?t have known. What [would have] happened to her in 30 days?? he said.

The Beecher Bay First Nation plans to convert the property to sustainable mixed-use villages, said Aaron Reith, economic development officer for the band.

Band members voted nearly 75 per cent in favour of ratifying the land code on Wednesday, which means the lots can now be leased on a 99-year term.

The band has invited the Trust for Sustainable Development to be a partner in the project. If plans go forward, the band will be paid for the value of the land up front.

It would also be a majority partner in the corporation that?s formed by the band and the trust, Reith said.

However, no lease has been signed. ?We don?t have a definitive agreement yet, but we will be working toward that,? Reith said.

Meanwhile, he said the trust has asked that the land be vacated so they can begin preparing it for summer sales presentations.

Reith acknowledged it would be difficult on tenants, but said an agreement with the trust would bring prosperity, pride and well-being to the community.

?It?s not a decision made lightly,? Reith said. ?The band is living in poverty, like a lot of other First Nations, and this is a way out. They?re leveraging their land to better the community.?

The band has hired Linda E. Ross Property Management to assist tenants in finding subsidized housing through relocation co-ordination services, as well as storage.

?I wish it could be both ways, but at that vote we almost had three-quarters saying yes to this. So that?s a pretty strong mandate from the community to move forward,? Reith said.

How Does the Heat Index Work?

As summer stretches on, temperatures continue to climb. High levels of humidity only make heat that much more oppressive. Back in 2005, as a heat wave rolled through the country, Engber explained the dynamics of calculating the heat-index. His original article is printed below:

Feelin' hot, hot, hot! Click image to expand.

Feelin' hot, hot, hot!

A national heat wave is expected to reach its peak today, as temperatures along the East Coast rise into the 90s and 100s. To make things worse, the high humidity has produced heat indexes of between 110 and 120. What's the "heat index," and how does it work?

The heat index tells you how hot it feels at a given humidity. Moist air feels hotter than dry air because it makes sweating less efficient. On a hot, dry day, your sweat will evaporate quickly and cool your skin; under humid conditions, sweat evaporates more slowly and doesn't do as much. Just as the wind chill attempts to measure how cold it feels under certain wind conditions, the heat index tries to measure how hot it feels given the humidity.

The formula for heat index is based on work completed in the late 1970s. R. G. Steadman wrote a paper called "The assessment of sultriness," in which he used a list of 20 factors to compute how hot you might feel on a given day. These factors included the rate at which you sweat, the type of clothes you're wearing, the surface area of your body, and what you happen to be doing.

To isolate the effects of temperature and humidity on the perception of heat, Steadman invented a typical situation: A person who's 5 feet 7 inches?and weighs 147 pounds walks at about 3.1 miles per hour in a light breeze, wearing long pants and a short-sleeved shirt. Then Steadman filled out his 20 variables with information from this scenario and figured out how hot his fictional person would feel at different outside temperatures and levels of humidity. He put the results in a table: Higher humidity would make his exemplar feel hotter, while drier conditions would make him feel cooler than it really is. For any given temperature, there is a percent humidity at which the weather "feels" exactly as hot as the thermometer indicates.

Meteorologists with the National Weather Service used Steadman's table to derive a simpler formula for heat index by creating a function that approximates its values (to within 1.3 degrees Fahrenheit) using only two variables?temperature and percent humidity. Since the formula incorporates all of Steadman's assumptions, how hot you feel may differ from the heat index reported on the evening news. For example, weather reports say that today's heat index in New York City is 106, and that the wind is blowing at 11 miles per hour. But the formula for heat index assumes that the wind is blowing at only 5.8 miles per hour?so the added breeze might make it feel cooler than what's been reported. (Unless it were really hot out?when it gets up into the high 90s, the wind actually makes you hotter.) Likewise, the further your dimensions are from?5 feet 7 inches?and 147 pounds, the less likely you are to feel like it's 106 degrees.

Explainer thanks Lans Rothfusz of the National Weather Service.

LAS CRUCES - The Burger Time Golf Tournament, bringing people together since 1993.

The 20th Burger Time "Sandra B. McGrath" Golf Tournament concluded Saturday at Sonoma Ranch Golf Course. The final day was highlighted by a marriage proposal, a hole-in-one and the presence of former Mayfield football coach Jim Bradley.

Alfonso Montes, 38, and Denise Corrales, 27, have been dating for three years and have a three-month old child.

"It was her birthday this weekend and we had our baby on April 10 so I thought I would propose to her on the 10th hole," Montes said.

Montes placed the engagement ring in the hole on the 10th green, proposing after Corrales found the ring in the hole.

"He told me to come over to see something and I thought it was going to be a snake or something," Corrales said. "I was very surprised. I had no idea."

Henry Apodaca, Michael Burton, Ryan Hefley and Tony Aldo have played together in the Burger Time for 10 of the 20 years. Playing for Mac's Meats on Saturday, Apodaca notched his second hole-in-one of the summer on Saturday, knocking in an ace on the Par 3 third hole with an eight iron.

"We were all born and raised in Las Cruces and what (Burger Time owner) Kevin McGrath and his team has done is remarkable," Apodaca said. "It's a great community effort

and we have fun every year."

McGrath presented a check for $299,000 to Las Cruces Public Schools on Friday from this year's tournament. McGrath said nearly 550 players participated in this year's event.

Although he wasn't walking the course this year, Bradley's presence at Sonoma Ranch didn't go unnoticed.

"He has been out here three times this weekend," said McGrath of the New Mexico high school coaching legend. "He has been such an important part of this event. It is important for him to be out here and know that he's loved by the community."

As the Burger Time tournament has progressed, it has grown to involve all high school sports and activities, although it began as a fundraiser for the football programs at Mayfield High, Las Cruces High and O?ate.

All three football teams raise between $10,000 to $15,000 per year -- a fact not lost on the players who enjoy the benefits of the tournament in the fall.

"It helps us a lot for everything from food to the new gloves or shoes we get every season from freshmen all the way up to varsity," O?ate senior running back Isaiah Fielder said. "The $10,000 is a lot of money and been really important for our program. It's also fun being out here and talking to all of these people."

(AP) ? Cory Monteith, the heartthrob actor who became an overnight star as a high school quarterback-turned-singer in the hit TV series "Glee" but had battled addiction since his teenage years, was found dead of undisclosed causes in a hotel room, Vancouver police said. He was 31.

Police said Sunday that an autopsy is expected to take place Monday to determine the cause of death. Acting Vancouver Police Chief Doug LePard said late Saturday there was no indication of foul play.

The Canadian-born actor, who played Finn Hudson on the Fox TV series about a high school glee club, was found dead around noon Saturday in his room on the 21st floor of the Fairmont Pacific Rim Hotel on Vancouver's waterfront, according to police.

Monteith had openly talked about struggling with addiction since he was a teenager, saying he had a serious problem and took just "anything and everything." He told Parade magazine in 2011 that he was "lucky to be alive."

In April, Monteith checked himself in to a treatment facility for "substance addiction" and asked for privacy as he took steps toward recovery, a representative said at the time. It was not his first time in rehab. He received treatment when he was 19.

Lea Michele, his "Glee" co-star and real-life girlfriend, told People magazine at the time that she loved and supported him and was proud he was seeking help.

Michele was requesting privacy after receiving news of Monteith's death, said her representative, Molly Kawachi of ID-PR .

"We ask that everyone kindly respect Lea's privacy during this devastating time," Kawachi said in in an email to The Associated Press.

Monteith's body was found by hotel staff who entered his room after he missed his check-out time, LePard said. Monteith had checked into the hotel on July 6.

"We do not have a great deal of information as to cause of death," said British Columbia Chief Coroner Lisa Lapointe. She said further tests would be needed to determine how Monteith died.

LePard said Monteith had been out with people earlier and that those people are being interviewed.

Video and electronic records from the hotel indicate Monteith returned to his room by himself early Saturday morning, and he was believed to be alone when he died, LePard said.

Lapointe said he had been dead for several hours by the time his body was found.

Several "Glee" cast members took to Twitter to express their feelings.

"I have no words! My heart is broken," Dot-Marie Jones, who plays football coach Shannon Beiste, said in a post on her Twitter account Saturday night. She called Monteith a "hell of a friend" and an "amazing" man.

Noah Puckerman actor Mark Salling said Sunday he was "going through a million memories and emotions today."

Lauren Potter, who plays Becky Jackson, the cheerleader with Down Syndrome, tweeted that she feels "totally heartbroken right now."

"I love Cory so much this hurts my heart," she wrote. "I hope my Glee family is OK right now. I love them all. Cory was always so nice to me. I have so many good memories."

Harry Shum Jr., who portrays dancer Mike Chang on the show, expressed disbelief on Twitter.

"This tragic news still doesn't seem real to me," said Shum. "I love you, Cory."

John Stamos, who appeared as a guest star on several episodes of "Glee" tweeted: "Heartbreaking. RIP Cory. We talked about how lucky he felt to be alive-and sober. We talked about playing drums. Glad i knew you Cory." Monteith played drums in a California-based indie rock band Bonnie Dune.

Matthew Morrison, who plays glee club coach Will Schuester, issued condolences before performing at a Sunday afternoon show at the cabaret 54 Below in New York, according to the New York Times. The newspaper said he changed his opening number to sing an a cappella rendition of "What I Did for Love" from the musical, "A Chorus Line," which was featured during the second season of "Glee."

"You guys came to see a show, I came to perform a show, so that's what we'll do," he said, according to the newspaper. "And we'll do it in Cory's honor."

The Times said Morrison went on with a set of show tunes and jazz standards, dancing on stage and quipping with the audience about the infamous drug-den history of the space under the 1970's club, Studio 54, where the performance took place.

Fox and the producers of "Glee," including 20th Century Fox Television, called Monteith an exceptional performer "and an even more exceptional person. He was a true joy to work with and we will all miss him tremendously."

"We are in shock and mourning this tragic loss," his representatives at Viewpoint Public Relations in Los Angeles said in a statement.

Monteith, who turned 31 on May 11, starred in "Glee" as a high school football player who puts his status and popularity at risk to join the glee club and its outcast members.

The show, with its pop music-based song-and-dance numbers and high-profile guest stars including Gwyneth Paltrow, became an immediate hit and made stars of its relatively unknown cast.

The series, which debuted in 2009, is in its fourth season.

On his Twitter account, Monteith described himself as "tall, awkward, canadian, actor, drummer, person."

He had recently shot a Canadian film called "All the Wrong Reasons," slated to be released later this year with actors Kevin Zegers, Karine Vanasse and Emily Hampshire.

In a 2010 interview with The Associated Press, Monteith was upbeat about life. He said that if "Glee" were to be canceled he would be OK.

"I've never been afraid of working," he said. "I've never been afraid of auditioning for jobs. Obviously, I've never been afraid of anonymity. I was happy (before 'Glee'). I'm happy now. I guess I'm well adjusted."

Monteith was among the "Glee" actors who remained series regulars as their characters graduated high school and moved on to other adventures. However, in real life Montieth dropped out of high school in Vancouver after his parents divorced.

According to his biography on Fox's website, Monteith was born in Calgary, Alberta, and moved to Vancouver Island as a child. Before turning to acting, he held a variety of jobs including Wal-Mart greeter, school bus driver, roofer and cab driver.

"Thanks for always being kind Cory. You came a long way from hanging on the beaches in Vancouver with the gang pre-Glee," tweeted Gerard Funk, an actor from Vancouver who joined the "Glee" cast last year.

Monteith's TV credits included roles on the series "Kaya" and "Kyle XY" and guest appearances on "Smallville," ''Supernatural," ''Stargate," ''Flash Gordon" and "Interns." His film credits included "Final Destination 3," ''The Invisible," ''Deck the Halls" and "Whisper."

His big break came when he submitted an audition tape to the "Glee" producers in Los Angeles and then raced straight down the Pacific Coast in his car from Vancouver when he was invited to meet them in person.

"I nailed it. I knew I nailed it," Monteith recalled about his audition in an interview with Canadian TV columnist Bill Brioux. "When you walk in to the room, the heads of Fox ... of course it's a little unnerving. Then you realize they're all waiting for you. It's kind of flattering in a way."

Monteith was an avid supporter of Project Limelight, a Vancouver charity that offers a theater and arts programs to at-risk youth. He dined with Project Limelight co-founder Maureen Webb at a Vancouver restaurant just days before his death.

In a Globe and Mail interview last year, Monteith credited Webb for suggesting that he enroll in acting classes when he was 19 years old and going down a "very dark path."

He kept in touch with Webb and made a video to support Project Limelight when the charity was launched last year.

"I think kids really need a place to go and feel like they belong," Monteith said in the video posted on Project Limelight's website. "When I was a kid, I struggled a lot with who I was and where my life was going and what I was interested in. And I was fortunate to have the arts inspire me."

Outside Vancouver hotel, fans paid tribute to Monteith by leaving notes, flowers and stuffed animals.

Helen Slater, 16, who was visiting from England, said she was shocked to hear about his death as she placed a note and a stuffed moose because he had once been photographed wearing moose antlers. She called him a "positive influence" and said "Glee" helped change her life.

"Nothing's going to be the same anymore," she said. The show "just put me (through) some really tough times, and helped me through depression a lot."
