A Crawford County High School sophomore had hoped to spread holiday cheer by dressing with his friends as Santa Claus, but instead, John George, III of Roberta was suspended from school.
Tuesday night, George updated his Facebook status, and said "Students of cchs ur in for a big surprise tomorrow <let the games begin>."
He was referring to his dressing as Santa, but some took the post to have a more sinister meaning. One parent called police.
Roberta Police went to the family's home and questioned George. Although they found no cause for concern, a police report said George's Facebook page "appeared to have a very Gothic and dark theme."
Wednesday morning, George was escorted off his school bus and suspended from school until officials complete their own investigation within 10 days.
Principal Mike Campbell issued a statement calling the post "disturbing," and expressed concern given the recent Connecticut shootings.
But George's father, John Jr. says the comparisons to Connecticut were an unfair assault on his son's character. "We don't own any guns. We don't have any of that stuff going on here and we don't believe in it. We're a good family. He's a mouthy kid like all of them, but he comes back in tune with everything and doesn't cause any problems."
George also says he gets into other holidays such as St. Patrick's Day and Valentine's Day, and that bringing in baked goods or snacks to share with other students is common for his family.
