Deck the Rec with healthy living | The University News

How to stay in shape during the holiday season

It?s that time of year again. Students are drowning in tests, haven?t slept in days and mountains of gingerbread cookies and other tempting Christmas treats will soon be staring students in the face. What?s a college student to do?

Unbeknownst to many, there are many resources at Saint Louis University to help students stay healthy, even at the end of the semester.

This past August, the first SLU Student Health 101 online magazine was sent to SLU students.

The purpose of the magazine was? ?[to encourage] students to tap into a wide variety of campus and national sources to better educate themselves on all aspects of healthy living,? Khannie Dastgah, aquatics and wellness coordinator, said.

Many groups on campus that have tried to promote wellness and healthy living have had trouble spreading their message. This initiative was yet another way for students to connect to other like-minded students. One of the biggest challenges for incoming students is the lifestyle adjustment and making healthy choices in their new, hectic lifestyle.

?The fitness programs are hard to fit into my schedule, and it?s all too easy to ignore my body when medical school applications are breathing down my neck,? junior Karena Nguyen said, echoing the sentiments of many students trying to balance healthy living with a frenetic academic schedule.

According to Dastgah, the most prevalent difficulties for new college students include, ?sleep deprivation, stress relief, time management, budgeting money and financial stability, peer pressure and making healthy choices regarding alcohol, tobacco and illegal drugs.?

While Simon Recreation Center offers access to an array of equipment and amenities, its offerings go well beyond the physical resources many students enjoy.

Besides the traditional weightlifting, treadmill-running and elliptical-prancing, Simon Recreation Center offers a plethora of alternatives for students not interested in subjecting

themselves to the monotonous white noise of a spinning treadmill.

?

Currently, 32 club sports teams are registered with the Student Government Association and Department of Recreation. Club swimming was added this past August and recently had their first meet at the University of Missouri.

?

These clubs provide students ?with an interest to practice and play competitively? and an opportunity to compete at a more competitive level, as club golf founder Joe Valentine said.

?

The club sports range from the usual, such as volleyball and lacrosse, to the borderline obscure, like Tai Chi and the Wilderness Adventure Club, the latter meant for ?camping, hiking, cycling, rock climbing, canoeing, skiing, caving?whatever activities our members choose,? according to their website.

?

However, for many students a club sport is still too much of a time commitment.

?

Simon Recreation Center offers numerous intramural sports for casual competitors. They are even divided into multiple leagues for Greeks, coed teams and varying levels of competitiveness. The competitive ?A? leagues are not for the faint of heart though; some intramural referees say they have even disqualified teams for bringing back superstars that graduated long ago.

In additional to intramural, Simon Recreation Center offers a variety of programs and classes.

?There?s something for everyone, from aquatics classes, to yoga, pilates, spinning, hip-hop, zumba, ballroom and salsa,? Dastgah said.

Simon Recreation Center has instituted a more inclusive class fee. Registrants pay a one-time fee for an all-access pass to any fitness classes offered during the season. This gives those unsure of what class to participate in the opportunity to do a bit of shopping and sampling, figuring out which class best suits their interests and abilities.

The most well-known problems facing college students, though, are the diet issues resulting from the new environment. No longer can moms force their children to eat their peas, and those chicken nuggets at Griesedieck Dining Hall are all-too-inviting, even for breakfast.

?In terms of obtaining fresh produce, you?re limited to bananas, oranges and apples? everything you get for your meal plan is pretty much processed food,? Nguyen said.

Multiple associations on campus have been working to remedy this though, the first being Billiken Dining Services, promoting events like ?National Eating Healthy Day? at Griesidieck, highlighted by special promotions and ?heart healthy meals? like spinach and strawberry salads and fresh fruits.

Simon Recreation Center now works with Chartwells, the provider of dining services on campus, to promote healthier choices and provide more options for health-conscious students. The two collaborate to organize events to achieve their common goals. Professionals from Simon Recreation Center provide health, fitness and wellness information to students, while Billiken Dining Services cooks up healthy, alternative meals.

?In the past five years, the healthy options on campus have drastically increased and improved.? Many people believe that campus food or cafeteria food isn?t always going to be the healthiest; however, taking an active role in your nutrition can help you realize that healthy options are available at all SLU dining facilities,? Dastgah said.

Of course, one of the most chic culinary offerings on SLU?s campus is Fresh Gatherings Caf? in the Doisy College of Health Sciences, which is operated by the Department of Nutrition and Dietetics. The goal of the caf? is to be ?eco-friendly, support local farmers and provide the patrons with menu items using local products,? according to their website. The caf? also operates an organic farm on campus. The menu has diverse offerings, from grab-and-go salads to smoothies. The most unique of these offerings is the Harvest Market that Fresh Gatherings hosts on Fridays during the fall.

One of the largest cooperative events among groups at SLU is the annual ?Good Eats, Good Health,? which will be held on Wednesday, Jan. 30. The free event brings together a variety of on- and off-campus organizations to make students aware of ?healthy businesses and food alternatives around SLU,? as Dastgah phrased it.

While it is easy for students to dismiss their culpability in making healthy choices, the new reality is that college campuses nationwide have gone to great lengths to provide the resources to live a healthy lifestyle. The responsibility for making good decisions and utilizing the available resources falls on the student.

ATLANTA (AP) ? Drew Brees led two time-consuming field-goal drives before throwing his third interception to set up an Atlanta field goal that gave the Falcons a 20-13 lead early in the fourth quarter Thursday night.

The New Orleans' defense held Atlanta without a first down for five straight possessions in a span that began early in the second quarter and carried through most of the third quarter.

Garrett Hartley kicked field goals of 21 and 52 yards in the third quarter for New Orleans.

The Falcons looked dominant while building a 17-0 lead early in the second quarter. Brees, who threw two first-half interceptions, regained his touch as the Saints scored 13 straight points.

The first-down drought for Atlanta ended after William Moore intercepted Brees' pass late in the third quarter. Matt Ryan then completed an 18-yard pass to Tony Gonzalez and a 20-yard pass to Roddy White to set up Matt Bryant's 29-yard field goal, pushing the Falcons lead to sevens.

Michael Turner had a 3-yard scoring run in the first quarter, and Ryan threw a 17-yard touchdown pass to Gonzalez early in the second quarter before the Falcons' offense stalled.

The Falcons, motivated by four straight losses in their NFC South rivalry with New Orleans, took a 17-7 halftime.

Brees has been sharp against the Falcons, averaging 302.8 yards passing as the Saints won 11 of the last 13 in the series, including a 31-27 win in New Orleans on Nov. 11.

Brees threw two interceptions before finally leading a touchdown drive late in the second quarter.

On third-and-9 from the Saints 21, Brees completed a 32-yard pass over the middle to Lance Moore. Falcons defensive end Kroy Biermann drew an offside penalty on a third-down play from the Atlanta 26 to keep the drive alive.

Officials initially ruled Pierre Thomas scored on a 10-yard run, but a video review showed his knee was down before he crossed the goal line. Mark Ingram scored from the 1.

Brees led the Saints on another drive but ran out of time. The half ended following Brees' fourth straight pass to running back Darren Sproles, this one inside the Falcons 5. With the Saints out of timeouts, Brees couldn't get his team back to the line before time ran out.

The Falcons made a strong statement on their first possession. Atlanta gained 71 yards on five straight running plays after opening the drive with a 9-yard pass from Ryan to Gonzalez. Turner started the spree with a 35-yard run. Jacquizz Rodgers had back-to-back 14-yard gains before Turner stormed in from the 3.

With his touchdown, Turner snapped a tie with former Falcons receiver Terance Mathis to set the franchise career record with 58 total touchdowns. Turner also has the team record with 57 rushing touchdowns. He caught his first career touchdown pass in Week 4 against Carolina.

Falcons safety Thomas DeCoud intercepted a pass from Brees intended for Marques Colston in the end zone to end the Saints' first possession.

In the second quarter, Falcons linebacker Sean Weatherspoon intercepted a pass off running back Chris Ivory's hands, setting up Bryant's 45-yard field goal. The pass from Brees was behind Ivory.

Atlanta cornerback Asante Samuel left the game after aggravating his right shoulder injury. Samuel had been listed as questionable with the injury, and he didn't make it through the Saints' opening drive.

Brees completed a 38-yard pass to Joseph Morgan on a third-down play. Samuel, who was covering Morgan, walked off the field with his right arm kept close to his chest.

The Falcons listed Samuel's status as questionable. Robert McClain and Chris Owens took over for Samuel at cornerback.

Atlanta receiver Harry Douglas returned after leaving the game with an ankle injury in the first quarter.

Sonar vision system for congenitally blind

ScienceDaily (Nov. 27, 2012) ? A "sonar vision" system that enables people who are blind from birth to perceive the shape of a face, a house or even words and letters, is being developed by a team at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem. Using this device, the researchers have shown that, in people that are blind from birth, the areas of the cerebral cortex normally devoted to reading become activated in response to stimulation.

The results of this study, conducted in conjunction with researchers at the ICM Brain and Bone Marrow Institute Research Center (Inserm/UPMC/AP-HP) and NeuroSpin (CEA-Inserm), were published in Neuron on November 8.

It is generally accepted that the visual cortex fails to develop normally in the congenitally blind, to such an extent that it can prove impossible to recover sight at a later point -- even in cases where blindness can be corrected. In reality, the blind can indeed access a kind of vision, describe objects, and even identify written words and letters, using a "sensory substitution device" (SSD), which transforms images into sound.

These are the results demonstrated in the study conducted at the Edmond and Lily Safra Neuroscience Center (Hebrew University of Jerusalem). The study was conceived by researchers at the Hebrew University, who carried out the experimental components, with scientific support from French cognitive neuroimaging specialists.

The device consists in a small video camera embedded in a pair of eyeglasses, a laptop (or Smartphone) which transforms images into sounds, and stereo headphones to hear the sounds produced. For example, an oblique line is transformed into an increasingly high-pitched sound (or increasingly lower-pitched sound). The same principle is used to encode much more complex images in auditory form.

Using this system, the blind can achieve greater "visual" acuity than that defined as blindness according to WHO criteria.

After only 70 hours of specialized training, the blind are able to correctly classify images into different categories (faces, houses, etc.). They can also perceive other important information, such as where people are located in a room and certain facial expressions. They can even read words and letters (see videos at http://brain.huji.ac.il/).

In addition to the performance enabled by this sensory substitution system, the researchers at the Hebrew University wanted to understand what happens in the brain when a blind person learns to "see" through sound. To this end, they have developed a functional MRI study based on a specific paradigm.

In particular, they have shown that the regions of the cortex normally devoted to visual perception, which seem to serve no apparent use in the blind, become highly activated in response to the "sonar vision" of faces, houses and words, etc.

Not only is the visual cortex activated, it also demonstrates a "normal" functional selectivity of different categories of objects. Thus, in a sighted person, a very specific region of the visual cortex in the left hemisphere (known by the acronym VWFA), is known to become more activated when perceiving a string of letters than when perceiving any other kind of object. It is exactly this same region that is activated when a blind person reads letter using the "sonar vision" device.

"The fact that this specialization for reading develops after just a few hours of training shows a remarkable degree of cerebral plasticity," explained Stanislas Dehaene (NeuroSpin brain imaging center). These results back up the idea that that the so-called visual cortex is selective in analyzing the shape of objects, and can perform this function based on visual input (as is generally the case), but also, if necessary, based on auditory or tactile input.

"These results suggest that it may be possible, with the right technology and rehabilitation, to 'wake up' certain areas of the brain and access certain aspects of the visual world, even after years, or even a lifetime of blindness," concluded Laurent Cohen (ICM Research Center).

Carroll says Sherman, Browner expected vs. Chicago

(AP) ? Seattle Seahawks coach Pete Carroll expects to have his starting cornerbacks available this Sunday in Chicago.

After that is anyone's guess.

Carroll said Monday he plans on Richard Sherman and Brandon Browner playing this week against the Bears, despite the possibility they could be facing four-game suspensions for violating the NFL's policy on performance-enhancing drugs.

Carroll didn't say much regarding the duo at his regularly scheduled media availability, trying not to violate league rules. But his belief is that Sherman and Browner will be able to play in potentially Seattle's most important game of the season.

"As of right now, I'm planning on those guys playing," Carroll said.

ESPN.com first reported Sunday afternoon, following the Seahawks' 24-21 loss at Miami, that Browner and Sherman are facing suspensions and are in the process of appealing. The team said Sunday night it was aware of the report and according to the league's collective bargaining agreement, players can continue to play until the appeal is heard and settled.

The team is limited in what it can say regarding the possible suspensions and Carroll eventually said he wouldn't comment further until there is some resolution.

"Because it's so important we do this properly I'm not going to comment on anything about it. That's the best way to do this because these are league issues," Carroll said. "At this point I'm going to keep it there and hope you can respect that this is the way we have to do that, and we can talk about it later on."

In a phone interview with Seattle reporters after Carroll's press conference finished, Browner's agent Peter Schaffer said that his client only received notice of the failed test last week.

"Brandon Browner has no knowledge of how any illegal substance could have gotten into his system," Schaffer said. "He is an outstanding person and a very good football player. He takes tremendous care of his body and he is very careful with what he puts into it. We're exploring all avenues to try and figure out how any substance out of the ordinary would be in his system."

Schaffer added that the league typically schedules appeals within 20 days of the notice being received, depending on circumstances. He did not provide specifics on when Browner's appeal would take place.

"It's too early to tell what we're going to need, what witnesses and evidence and experts are going to be required, so there is no way to even guess at this point," he said.

Sherman, an active participant in social media, posted on his Twitter account late Sunday night after arriving back in the Northwest, "This ... issue will be resolved soon and the truth will come out. Not worried."

If Browner and Sherman are found guilty of violating the league's policy, they would be the fourth and fifth Seahawks players in the last calendar year to be violators. Guard John Moffitt was suspended four games late last season. Reserve offensive lineman Allen Barbre was suspended for the first four games of this season before being released by the team once his suspension was up. And just last week, rookie safety Winston Guy was handed a four-game suspension after taking an over-the-counter product that had a banned substance in the ingredients, according to his agent.

None of those suspensions could have the impact of Browner and Sherman, and it could not come at a much worse time with the Seahawks trying to hold on to the final wild-card spot in the NFC. The Seahawks (6-5) are tied with Tampa Bay and Minnesota, but hold the tiebreakers.

Seattle's defense is predicated on the ability of its cornerbacks to play man coverage and lock up receivers. Sherman and Browner allow strong safety Kam Chancellor to play closer to the line of scrimmage in run support and give free safety Earl Thomas the chance to roam the secondary with his speed.

If the duo does miss time, Seattle would turn to veteran Marcus Trufant and a trio of youngsters ? Walter Thurmond, Byron Maxwell and Jeremy Lane ? to fill the spots. Trufant was a starter until getting injured during the 2011 season, while Seattle has hoped Thurmond would develop into a key contributor, but he has been slowed by injuries. Thurmond has yet to be active for a game this season after starting the year on the physically unable to perform list.

"They've been special in their effectiveness and a lot of it has to do with the way we ask them to play. It suits them very well. It fits. They've been a big factor for us. We love the way they're playing. ... How it develops in the future with our guys when they get a chance they can play at the level and style that we want," Carroll said. "We still try and tailor our expectation of our play to the athlete and what he can do and what they're capable of doing, and we've always looked at it that way. Some guys play a little different than others and we have a pretty good group of guys to battle and give us versatility, I think."

Unbearable Betrayal

Emily Yoffe, aka Dear Prudence, is on Washingtonpost.com weekly to chat live with readers. An edited?transcript of the chat is below. (Sign up here?to get Dear Prudence delivered to your inbox each week. Read Prudie?s?Slate columns?here. Send questions to Prudence at prudence@slate.com.)

Emily Yoffe: Hope you all had a great Thanksgiving. This weekend I went to the stores and did my part for the economy. So much so that my card was declined when I was buying socks. A call to the credit card company had them explaining to me they became suspicious because I appeared to be "in a frenzy."

Q. Is It Time To Get Over It?: When my ex and I were married, we had trouble conceiving and years of heartache. I thought our marriage was strong enough to survive this, then I discovered he was having an affair with my sister. We had a huge, traumatic confrontation and my then husband and I decided to move and make a fresh start. A few weeks after we moved, my sister gave the news that?surprise!?she was pregnant. My ex then divorced me to start a family with her. Because I'd just started a new job and had a mortgage, it was financially impossible for me to leave. I stayed in the new city by myself and eventually made friends and settled there. My parents were also very hurt and angry, but when the baby came they mellowed and reconciled. My niece is now 5 and I have never met her. We take turns attending family functions because I can't bear to be in the same room as them. Recently my parents gently asked if I would consider having a Christmas dinner with my sister. I told them I would think about it and I really did. I took a deep breath and went on my sister's Facebook page for the first time. There, I saw hundreds of happy pictures of them as a family. My ex-husband kissing her after she'd just given birth, photos of the happy first birthday party, family trips, etc. She was tagged in a status update from my ex: "Celebrating another amazing anniversary with my beautiful wife, thank you for giving me so much happiness and our perfect daughter." I literally vomited after reading that. After five years, is it time for me to get over it and try to force myself to at least tolerate their company?

A: It's no wonder what you saw made you sick to your stomach. The violation against you was enormous. However, I don't think you should conclude that the only way you could be with them is to have a bunch of air-sickness bags with you. You have been in a bubble of denial for the past five years, so a tidal wave of evidence of the happy family life you feel these cheaters stole from you is bound to be overwhelming. If over the past few years you'd had some minimal contact with them and knew your niece slightly, you would be in a different place emotionally now. Yes, you might have still concluded you want nothing to do with them, but you would have make that decision from a more rational place. So give yourself time. You may want, possibly with the help of a therapist or even a friend, to give yourself some desensitization therapy. Instead of consuming pictures of the past five years at one gulp, over the next few months you could look occasionally at pictures of your niece. She is the innocent party here, and focusing on her might enable you to see that painful as it is, something positive has come out of all this. But Christmas is too soon for this. If you are going to find yourself being able to be in the room with this reconstituted family, it would be better to do it at a less loaded time?say a weekend in February with no connotations of holiday joy. Whatever you decide vis-a-vis your sister, be proud that you have moved on and built a happy life for yourself. (And how often do brothers- and sisters-in-law get it on? Just a few weeks ago I got a letter from a woman whose fianc? impregnated his brother's wife, but the brother remains none the wiser.)

Q. Sister-in-Law's Hospitality: My brother and sister-in-law invited our family and four other families over for Thanksgiving this weekend. We all brought side dishes, wine, desserts, and drinks so that they only needed to cook the turkey. When the meal was done, my sister-in-law came up to me and asked me to make sure to leave a check before we left. I asked her what the check was for and she said it was for hosting the dinner. She said $100 per couple should cover it. I was floored. The turkey only cost about $30 and everyone else bought at least as much in side dishes and wine. She told me there are a lot of costs that guests just don't see. In order to avoid a scene, I wrote her a check. (I know at least one other family reluctantly paid her as well.) I asked my brother what that was about and he didn't know anything about it. $500 to cook a turkey and host a dinner seems a bit steep to me?what should we do?

A. You should make other plans for Christmas if this chisler has invited you to celebrate that holiday. If you normally exchange gifts with them, consider that $100 for breast meat to be sufficient for the season. It's true there are hidden costs to hospitality, but invited guests are normally not expected to cover that month's mortgage. Your sister-in-law is a nut, and if you're ever invited for another gathering, tell her you'll supply your own peanut butter and jelly.

Q. Am I Too Prudish?: I am about to relocate to another state. My brother and his wife live in our soon to be home town and have generously offered me and my family a room until we find our own place. However, they have large nude portraits of themselves?one of my brother and another one of my SIL?hanging in the main hallway. They are not posing in any sexually suggestive way, but you see everything. Last time we visited my son was a toddler and the pictures weren't an issue. He is now 5 and I feel it's inappropriate for him to see nude portraits of his aunt and uncle. Is it rude if I ask them to take down the pictures? I'm all for giving kids age-appropriate sex ed, but I fear this is just too much too soon.

A: This isn't sex ed, it's art appreciation. You simply can't ask your brother and sister-in-law to cover their portraits the way former Attorney General John Ashcroft had the partially nude Spirit of Justice covered with drapes. Your son will likely take a cue from you, so if you don't take notice of the paintings he might not even focus on them. But if you find him staring, fascinated, then open the discussion by saying, "Those are interesting paintings, aren't they?" And whatever he says handle it with humorous aplomb. Keep in mind there's no age at which it's too soon for a kid to understand that everyone is naked under their clothes.

Q. Confused in Ariz.: It has recently been brought to my attention that my 35-year-old son is being accused of sexually molesting the son of my best friend. At the time their ages were 13 (my son) and 4 (her son). I am shocked and shaken but at the same time I believe my son who says it is not true. My best friend is upset as well and wants my son to admit it and apologize. Prudence, I am at a loss of what to do. I feel as if a 40-year friendship is going to end. Both families just found out about it as my godson just told his mother. We are all trying to deal with this. My daughter says we should all get the proper counseling if needed and move on with our separate lives. She says nothing can be done legally since my son denies it anyway. I am terrified of what might can happen and mourn a potentially lost valued friendship?

A: I think your daughter is right. This is a situation in which the truth may never be known (and the statutes of limitations has run on the potential crime). If your son absolutely denies the accusation, of course he's not going to apologize. And your friend seems naive to think that an apology would wrap things up and the friendship could continue. What a devastating turn of events; talking it through with a neutral party can help you deal with the fallout.

DEAR ABBY: I'm a 51-year-old man. Three years ago, my first and only marriage ended after 20 years. Over the past two years, I have been in a wonderful relationship with a very bright woman, "Toni," who told me she had been married twice before.A year ago, her job required that she move out of state, but we have successfully maintained the long-distance relationship with frequent visits and daily phone calls.A few days ago, I learned by chance that she was briefly married a third time while she was in her early 20s. ...

LONDON (AP) ? The Rolling Stones made a triumphant return to the London stage on Sunday night in the first of five concerts to mark the 50th anniversary of their debut as an American-oriented blues band.

They showed no signs of wear and tear ? except on their aging, heavily lined faces ? as frontman Mick Jagger swaggered and strutted through a stellar two-and-a-half hour show. He looked remarkably trim and fit and was in top vocal form.

The Stones passed the half-century mark in style at the sometimes emotional gig that saw former bassist Bill Wyman and guitar master Mick Taylor join their old mates in front of a packed crowd at London's 02 Arena.

It was the first of five mega-shows to mark the passage of 50 years since the band first appeared in a small London pub determined to pay homage to the masters of American blues.

Jagger, in skin-tight black pants, a black shirt and a sparkly tie, took time out from singing to thank the crowd for its loyalty.

"It's amazing that we're still doing this, and it's amazing that you're still buying our records and coming to our shows," he said. "Thank you, thank you, thank you."

Lead guitarist Keith Richards, whose survival has surprised many who thought he would succumb to drugs and drink, was blunter: "We made it," he said. "I'm happy to see you. I'm happy to see anybody."

But the band's fiery music was no joke, fuelled by an incandescent guest appearance by Taylor, who played lead guitar on a stunning extended version of the ominous "Midnight Rambler," and Mary J. Blige, who shook the house in a duet with Jagger on "Gimme Shelter."

The 50th anniversary show, which will be followed by one more in London, then three in the greater New York area, lacked some of the band's customary bravado ? the "world's greatest rock 'n' roll band" intro was shelved ? and there were some rare nostalgic touches.

Even the famously taciturn Wyman briefly cracked a smile when trading quips with Richards and Ronnie Wood.

The concert started with a brief video tribute from luminaries like Elton John, Iggy Pop and Johnny Depp, who praised the Stones for their audacity and staying power. The Stones' show contained an extended video homage to the American trailblazers who shaped their music: Muddy Waters, John Lee Hooker, Otis Redding, Bob Dylan, Johnny Cash and others. The montage included rare footage of the young Elvis Presley.

The Stones began their professional career imitating the Americans whose music they cherished, but they quickly developed their own style, spawning hundreds ? make that thousands ? of imitators who have tried in vain to match their swagger and style.

The concert began with some early Stones' numbers that are rarely heard in concert, including the band's cover of the Lennon-McCartney rocker "I Wanna Be Your Man" and the Stones original "It's All Over Now."

They didn't shy away from their darker numbers, including "Paint It Black" and "Sympathy for the Devil" ? Jagger started that one wearing a black, purple-lined faux fur cape that conjured up his late '60s satanic image.

He even cracked a joke about one of the band's low points, telling the audience it was in for a treat: "We're going to play the entire "Satanic Majesty's Request" album now," he said, referring to one of the band's least-loved efforts, a psychedelic travesty that has been largely, mercifully, forgotten.

He didn't make good on his threat.

He also made fun of the sky-high ticket prices, which had exposed the band to some criticism in the London press.

"How are you doing up in the cheap seats," he said, motioning to fans in the upper rows of the cavernous 02 Arena. "Except they're not cheap seats, that's the problem."

But Jagger seemed more mellow than usual, chatting a bit about the good old days and asking if there was anyone in the crowd who had seen them in 1962, when they first took to the stage.

He said 2012 had been a terrific year for Britain and that the Stones nearly missed the boat, playing no role in the celebration of the Queen's Diamond Jubilee, the London Olympics, or the new James Bond film.

"We just got in under the wire," he said. "We feel pretty good."

Holiday shopping season off to record start

(AP) ? There's a saying that you can't please all of the people all of the time. But apparently you can if they're holiday shoppers.

A survey released by the National Retail Federation on Sunday is showing that U.S. shoppers hit stores and websites at record numbers over the Thanksgiving weekend. They were attracted by stores' efforts to make shopping easier for everyone, including opening on Thanksgiving Day and expanding shipping and layaway options.

A record 247 million shoppers visited stores and websites over the four-day weekend starting Thanksgiving, according to the survey. That's up 9.2 percent from a year ago. Americans spent more too: The average holiday shopper spent $423 over the entire weekend, up from $398.

Total spending over the four-day weekend totaled $59.1 billion, up $52.4 billion in 2011.

The Yeshiva World Senior Ministers Address the Nation on ...

8:48PM IL: Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu addressed the nation in a live televised broadcast following the announced ceasefire compelled by the United States, brokered with the assistance of Egypt.

Channel 2 TV News released a survey ahead of the broadcast, signaling that 70% of the nation opposes a ceasefire with Hamas at this time. 24% are in favor and 6% are undecided. As the prime minister begins his address, just minutes ahead of the 21:00 starting time for the ceasefire, sirens continue to wail throughout southern Israel.

Following is the crux of the remarks made a short time ago by the prime minster, defense minister and foreign minister. Their remarks were brief and they did not take questions from the media. They did not address the terms of the ceasefire at this early stage, which is being reported by the Israeli media as being an unwritten agreement.

The Homefront Command announces that most schools and businesses in the 40km range from Gaza that have been shut due to the warfare will remain shut tomorrow, Thursday, 8 Kislev 5773 as the fragile ceasefire will have to earn the trust of the civilians and IDF alike.

Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu

Israel began the operation eight days ago after the attacks from Gaza become intolerable. I warned that our response would be a powerful one, a response that would enact a heavy price. They did not believe my words. They erred. We destroyed thousands of rockets, including most of the long range one capable of hitting Gush Dan along with destroying the Hamas infrastructure.

I would like to thank US President Barak Obama for his support of our right to defend ourselves and throughout Operation Pillar of Defense. Thanks to Secretary of State Hillary Clinton for her efforts as well.

Together with President Obama I decided to act against Hamas? weapons, the weaponry supplied to terrorist from Iran. Over recent days we got a look at just how well armed Hamas has become. Being a responsible government, we continued to weigh the military, defensive and political aspects of the operation as it was taking place.

At this time, the correct thing for the State of Israel to do is to see a prolonged ceasefire. As prime minister I maintain this ultimate responsibility to maintain the security of the nation. In the past week there were fatalities and in the name of the nation I send my condolences and wishes for a recovery to the injured.

To my colleagues Defense Minister Ehud Barak and Foreign Minister Avigdor Lieberman, thank you ? we worked as a team, as with the Forum of Nine Ministers.

Thanks to IDF Chief of Staff Lt.-Gen. Benny Gantz and Shin Bet Chief Cohen for their excellent work. In the name of the nation a thanks to the officers and soldiers, pilots, intelligence community and reservists who left their families. I admire the mayors and municipal leaders who maintained cool and calm. Above all, the people of Israel. We have a strong people and military.

Defense Minister Ehud Barak

The operation began seven days and five hours ago. The IDF was responsible to restore our deterrence by hitting Hamas hard and dismantling its infrastructure with minimal damage to our Homefront and minimal collateral damage to innocent residents of Gaza. Hamas and the Islamic Jihad were hit hard. Jabari and others like him were killed. Over 130 killed and over 1,000 wounded in over 1,300 sorties.

Weapons storage, launching and manufacturing apparatus are gone to a great extent. The Iron Dome operated against over 1,400 rocket launches, firing over 400 times with an outstanding response towards protecting the homefront.

Thanks to the Obama administration and to US Defense Secretary Leon Panetta for the ongoing support and assistance.

70 rockets hit urban area and two soldiers and four civilians were killed, other injured.

Tens of thousands of reservists were called up in the event a ground invasion would be required. At this time southern residents are still under fire and in the coming hours and days they will have to continue showing this fortitude.

I would like to express my admiration for the IDF, Chief of Staff Ganz, OC Southern Commander Russo and Air Force Command Eshel and all of their officers along with Shin Bet head Yoram Cohen and Homefront Defense Minister Avi Dichter.

Special thanks to the citizens that endured the warfare, to the reservists who time after time respond to the call, always willing to put all else aside.

We are heading for a difficult period and this will not be a simple matter?

We may be required to again in the future, an even more expanded operation. We acted responsibility and calmly and my thanks to the prime minister and foreign minister, with the latter dealing with the international community.

The achievement is an important one.

Foreign Minister Avigdor Lieberman

What occurred was three dimensional, military, politically and diplomatically. Thanks to President Obama, EU Foreign Minister Catherine Ashton and the international community towards bringing an end to the attacks from Gaza. I believe the mission was successful.

This was a synchronized operation between all agencies involved. Without a doubt the slanted picture painted by the international media and the life, we worked like synonymously here and the mission was accomplished.

The people were ready to endure and to remain in shelters. A thanks to the IDF and security agencies. A special thanks to PM Netanyahu for running this and to DM Barak for his major role in the operation.

I believe the test is not behind us and we will have to measure compliance. I think it is important to site the role of Egypt in handling this and achieving a ceasefire, for President Morsi is not in an easy place and despite all the criticism he used his influence to act responsibly and work towards actualizing the ceasefire.

How Croatian agriculture bought the farm

Agriculture was once a core industry in the former Yugoslavia. But corruption and mismanagement turned the region's one-time breadbasket into a 'small war zone.'

All the assets of the Retkovci farm, including these buildings in the nearby village of Vodjinci, have been lost.

Beyond the long grass lies a runway where the planes no longer land. It was owned by the villagers here, along with the farm and the fields.

The crop-dusters flew away when the farm went bust. In the following years, the villagers? shares in their business also vanished, seemingly into thin air.

For Ivan Zivkovic, who worked at the farm, the disused airstrip is a neglected piece of an unsolved puzzle. ?We never found out who owns it now, or what they paid for it,? he says. ?There is no trace of the money.?

The collapse of his farm is part of an even larger puzzle ? the catastrophic decline of agriculture in the breadbasket regions of the former Yugoslavia. Food imports and prices are rising in countries that once fed themselves comfortably.

In the lush plains of Serbia, farmers are getting poorer, while their children migrate to the cities for work. In Croatia, agriculture today accounts for three percent of the Gross Domestic Product (GDP), compared to almost 20 percent two decades ago.

Trade liberalization and the current economic crisis bear some of the blame, as do the conflicts that tore the former Yugoslavia apart. But across the region, experts say it is corruption and mismanagement that have brought agriculture to its knees.

No soldiers traded gunfire over Mr. Zivkovic?s farm in eastern Croatia. Instead, its workers spent the 1990s fighting businessmen and lawyers for their tractors and orchards ? the spoils of a privatization deal gone wrong.

?It was like a small war zone,? says Marko Tominac, an insolvency manager who tried to settle the farm?s accounts among Zivkovic and his colleagues. ?Everybody was screaming that everybody else was getting the bigger part ? including the workers.?

The privatizations of the last two decades were largely ? but not universally ? disastrous. A handful of the region?s largest collective farms have changed ownership and remained productive.

But most of the small and medium-sized concerns did not survive the transition from socialism. They were treated as the low-hanging fruit of the privatization boom ? bought cheap, stripped bare, and discarded ? by men who had little interest in agriculture.

In Serbia, alleged drug baron Darko Saric funded the purchase of Mitrosrem, a collective farm now hovering on the brink of bankruptcy. Mr. Saric denies the charges against him and is on the run from the law.?In Slovenia, agriculture?s contribution to the GDP has shrunk to a quarter of what it was 20 years ago. The country?s privatization was ?tycoon-oriented, wild, and idiotic,? according to Ales Kuhar, an associate professor in food economics at Ljubljana University.

In Croatia, where privatization is commonly referred to as ?legalized theft,? a state audit published evidence of hundreds of bad deals from the previous decade. The audit was completed in 2004, and the statute of limitations relating to the deals has since been removed, allowing any privatizations from that period to be investigated.

However, prosecutors say they are only investigating 31 people at the moment, and have yet to file any indictments. The country?s judiciary is routinely singled out for criticism by the European Union, which Croatia is scheduled to join next year.
