Quantum DAT160 The Low Cost Solution For Backing Up ...

Here at Odsi we're more than a competitive online reseller of brand name tape media. We focus on all of the things that are of interest to our customers, not only in saving you money but also in saving you time.

View all articles by Mark Paul Talk about hundreds of favorite songs, a million memorable and precious pictures and loads of other stuff that took ages to gather and the only place where all of it has been stored is the computer?s hard drive. No doubt the computer?s hard drive can have huge spaces to fit in all your data very easily, but when the hard drive crashes, it takes down with it the possible chances of recovering the recorded data. In such a disastrous instance as this, we end up losing literally all of our data. Only some part of the data might be recovered, but not all of it. This is where the backup technology set in and played a huge role in the popularity of the backup devices.

The Quantum offers its customers with the smart DAT 160 tape media solution for protecting the valuable data assets at a low cost. Quantum has been well known for manufacturing highly reliable backup devices and other products related to the data storage. Before the E-business environment flourished, only the large businesses used to backup their data, which cost a lot compared to this DAT160 storage technology.

Quantum DAT 160 tape comes with a raw storage capacity of 80 GB. This is sufficient for small and medium sized businesses that have to comply with data retention legislations. Even the common users can backup huge files sitting at home with the same convenience as the traditional floppy disk or the USBs. The storage capacity of the Quantum DAT 160 media cartridge can be increased to up to 160 gigabytes for the storage of compressed data. The traditional floppy disks that people used only had space as little as the storage of hardly a few megabytes which could incorporate a document or a picture at one time.

Even the USBs can?t fulfill basic backup requirements of businesses or individuals who wish to backup everything from their computer systems. The Quantum DAT-160 technology is very user friendly, space efficient and can be easily handled.? The data transfer speed of the Quantum DAT-160 tape format is around 50 GB per second. With the transfer rate such as this, the people responsible for the backups of businesses will see a considerable change in their backing up system.

The Quantum DAT 160 backup tape has been built with the technology of MRS (Media Recognition System).? This technology makes sure that the drive knows that the tape is being used only for DAT. This smart approach has helped to prevent the unnecessary errors which occur because of increased spacing loss. The tape also has a smooth and shiny film base which ensures that the drive accurately write/read the data tracks.

The Quantum DAT 160 tape has been built with a perfect static resistance system which prevents the unwanted accumulation of dust into the tape. With a pollutant-free environment, the cartridge would perform better and will have an increased useful life due to the lesser wear and tear. So increase the data security of your entire IT center with this economical solution.

TDK 27822, DDS6 tapes are very robust, reliable and cost efficient. High performance SDLT tapes, LTO tapes, DDS tapes, AIT tapes, RDX cartridges and Imation 26837, DDS6 tapes are available at Odsi.co.uk, at low price. (AP) ? Chinese lawmakers stripped disgraced politician Bo Xilai of his last official position Friday, formally expelling him from the country's top legislature and clearing the way for criminal proceedings against the once-rising political star.

Though largely a formality since Bo was purged from the Communist Party late last month, his expulsion from the congress removes his immunity from prosecution. That sets the stage for a criminal case involving accusations of corruption and other wrongdoing, including interfering in the investigation into the murder of a British businessman. Bo's wife and a household aide were convicted of the murder last month.

Chinese leaders are keen to resolve the party's most damaging public scandal in decades as they prepare for next month's once-in-a-decade transition of power. They are handing over to the next generation of leaders, who will be tasked with shoring up public support in the face of widespread disgust over official graft and influence peddling.

They may even want to push through a trial before the opening of the party congress on Nov. 8, though some experts say there may not be enough time. Leaders still need to reach a consensus on how harshly to punish Bo, which of his associates to include in the trial and ensure the accused remains compliant in the courtroom, said Ding Xueliang, an expert on the Chinese leadership at Hong Kong University of Science and Technology.

"It's really a very muddy situation," he said.

As the most powerful official in the southwestern mega-city of Chongqing, Bo had been considered a candidate for a seat on the party's all-powerful Politburo Standing Committee, and his toppling exposed sharp infighting in the party's uppermost ranks.

The National People's Congress Standing Committee said it approved a decision to remove Bo as a deputy, but offered no details.

Bo's downfall has been spectacular: His wife, Gu Kailai, was convicted of murdering British businessman Neil Heywood, and Bo's former right-hand man was accused of taking bribes, abusing power and trying to defect to the United States, among other crimes.

Even before that, Bo had angered many in Beijing with his populist style that defied the authoritarian party's demands that those seeking higher office merely follow orders from Beijing and maintain a low-key image. Bo's initiatives included a sweeping crackdown on organized crime and a campaign to revive Mao-era songs and culture that reminded many of the excesses of the 1966-76 Cultural Revolution.

Bo's expulsion cements an impression of unity among the leadership in rejecting his neo-Maoist approach in favor of stability under the incoming slate of leaders, said China politics expert Feng Chongyi of the University of Technology in Sydney, Australia.

"It's very positive in that way, but not sufficient to conclude that the party will become any more liberal," Feng said.

Chinese authorities have not yet announced specific charges against Bo, but in expelling him on Sept. 28, the party accused him of offenses reaching back two decades that range from taking bribes and abusing his power to having improper relationships with an unspecified number of women. He has not been seen in public since mid-March and is believed to be in detention at a Beijing prison.

Beijing attorney Li Xiaolin said Thursday that Bo's wife's family has hired him and Shen Zhigeng to defend Bo, but the two lawyers are not yet formally accredited by the authorities to represent him.

Bo's downfall was set off when his former police chief and close confidant Wang Lijun fled to the U.S. Consulate in the southwestern city of Chengdu, where he revealed to diplomats details of Heywood's death, which previously was called accidental. A month later, Bo was sacked as Chongqing's Communist Party secretary and suspended from the 25-member Politburo.

The scandal raised talk of a political struggle involving Bo supporters intent on derailing succession plans calling for Vice President Xi Jinping to lead the party for the next decade, as well as concerns over corruption among top-tier politicians.

A lengthy New York Times expose published Friday claimed the family of Premier Wen Jiabao has amassed assets worth $2.7 billion through a web of investments, most of it accumulated after he rose to high office in 2002. Chinese censors swiftly blocked the Times' Chinese-language site that carried a translated version of the story, although Internet users with the technical knowledge could still access it by penetrating China's firewall.

Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Hong Lei told reporters at a press briefing that the report "blackens China and has ulterior motives." He refused to elaborate despite several follow-up questions.

While Wen is expected to leave his post in the spring, the report is a blow to his reputation as a politician concerned with bettering the lives of ordinary Chinese.

In another example of the lack of transparency, a report released Thursday by the Washington think-tank the Brookings Institution points out that the brother of Vice Premier Li Keqiang has been a top official in the State Tobacco Monopoly Administration, even while Li oversaw public health policy.

The agency both regulates and runs the China National Tobacco Corporation, the world's biggest cigarette maker, and taxes on cigarettes are a significant source of government revenue.

With Li expected to be promoted to premier in the leadership change, the report suggests that the brother, Li Keming, be reassigned.

LA Nears Ban on Sale of Kitten and Puppy Mill Pets ... - Life With Cats

After a 12-2 vote today by the Los Angleles City Council, LA is poised to become the largest US city to ban the sale of commercially bred pets. Because the vote to ban the sale of cats, dogs and rabbits purchased by pet stores from commercial breeders was not unanimous, a second vote on the ordinance, which only needs a simple majority, will be held next week.

The proposed ban is meant to diminish the market for kitten and puppy mill pets and, at the same time, encourage shops to carry adoptable pets from shelters, thus saving thousands of lives every year. Under the proposed law, pet stores will be able to obtain animals from the city?s animal shelters or from humane societies registered with the city?s Department of Animal Services. Individuals will be allowed to purchase pets directly from breeders.

The penalty for a first time violation of the ban would be $250, with the fine going up to $1,000 for a third strike. Some pet shop owners are opposed to the ban and claim it will hamper their ability to make money.

The proposed law is sponsored by City Councilman Paul Koretz, a friend to animals who includes a message to adopt and a link to the city?s department of animal services at his official webpage. The two no votes today came from Councilmen Mitchell Englander and Bill Rosendahl. Englander said the ordinance will be costly to enforce and bad for business and the local economy. Englander withdrew support when Koretz declined to remove rabbits from the list of pets affected.

The Game Jar | My Fantastic Gaming Community

Three years ago I had just started a job working for a small health and safety consultancy in Wootton Bassett where I live. I had always been a huge fan of games, but safe to say I had no idea about the sheer scale of likeminded people who were only a tweet away. I had no idea how to get a job in the games industry ? I knew I had probably missed my chance by not studying the right subjects at college or gambling on university, but hey, this was a time where I didn?t even know community managers for developers existed. I didn?t know about things like Gamescom or Eurogamer Expo ? I had never looked beyond the titles on the shelves, satisfying myself with the escapism they brought me and thinking that this was all I needed to enjoy games. You may say I?m a late bloomer to the world of gaming. True I?m a relative virgin to the community but I?ve loved and played games since I can remember. But if the gaming community is a party, then I?ve shown up fashionably late? and the party is awesome.

It all started with something called Twitter ? this new fandangled social media thing where apparently you can stalk celebrities and find out what they do from cutting their toe nails to abusing their fellow celebs. Whilst this is loathsomely possible, it can also be used to do a great deal of good.?On signing up to Twitter I thought I?d search for any local-based tweeters that I could start following. I came across a certain Joe Dale who I happened to go to school with, albeit a few years below but knew him through my sister and the occasional ?hello? over the years. It was the start of something meaningful to me; Joe was writing for Death by Robots (now TheGameJar) at the time and I thought that sounded wicked cool. I enquired as to what he did there as it sounded like something I?d like to do and he gave me some pointers as to who to follow on Twitter and to get writing some reviews.

I quickly found that the gaming industry had a great and active presence on Twitter. I found myself following a whole host of users and engaging in conversation with people I?d never met, but regarding topics we were passionate about. I?d never had this with friends from school so Twitter became a great place for me to?critique and?discuss topics ? and people who shared that interest would see it and engage with me. Twitter, I thought, you?re onto a winner with me.

Death By Robots needed a few new writers ? Joe introduced me to Jenn and Ryan to whom I submitted a few pieces to try and showcase my fledgling writing skills. They were thankfully impressed, or I was the best of a bad bunch, so we had a Skype chat, which I found scary. How am I meant to come across to these new people? I want to impress but don?t want to look like a douche?! However, my fears were misplaced and we got on great again thanks to similar interests in games and music alike. Here I?ve met two people who six months before I probably would never have met had I not joined Twitter.

What I want to get across in this article is not my whole backstory on how I came to TheGameJar but how social media and the wider gaming community has played a huge positive role in my life. I have a great group of close friends from school but they can?t satisfy me the way my gaming community can, and I don?t mean sexually. If I went to the pub with my friends and started talking about games or some sociological and ideological aspects of gaming most of them would switch off ? it just doesn?t interest them the way it does me. Yet if I post on Twitter or write a feature for TheGameJar on why games make us happy, people respond and interact with that and there aren?t many better feelings than when people give you positive feedback and interaction. We all have an opinion that we love to air and Twitter gives us an outlet to vent our frustrations, joy, anger and happiness to people who will, in some cases, actually listen to you ? a hub of likeminded souls.

Some people are lucky enough and have the skills to pay the bills and work in the gaming industry as programmers, coders, PR, community managers (I know what they are now) and a whole host of other roles. Unfortunately there are those of us who work in the ?real? world and engage as much as time allows into our gaming community. I?ve come to appreciate the hard work and dedication required to make a successful game, be it the Assassin?s Creeds of this world or the iPhone apps of Hardlines and New Star Soccer. Twitter is the best way to engage with an audience who are after what you have.

Through TheGameJar I?ve been lucky enough to attend a few expos and meet a number of people who work within the industry. Being able to redeem the occasional review code for a new game is a great perk, but pales in comparison to the buzz I get out of my timelines and writing feedback. Being able to meet the people you interact with on a regular basis is fantastic and I hope for more opportunities in the future as we gamers are often the shy type. Hence we seek out the contact from our online peers as we often find it a struggle in person.

There?s just something about my gaming community that fills a hole. I?m checking my Tweetdeck as often as I can and get frustrated when I have to work, therefore missing a few hour?s worth of tweets ? I could have missed something big! There?s always a game or controversial topic being discussed that naturally needs my opinion whether others care to read it or not, but that?s the beauty of Twitter; you can divulge your opinion until the cows come home and more often than not someone will come back with their own opinion, sparking a heated debate than ends up with more Twitter handles in the 140 characters than actual opinionated content.

My gaming community are my followers and the people I follow on Twitter, Skype friends and Facebook friends, people who interact with my blog posts and game posts. They give me joy, laughter and at times incredulities. A few have gone on to become people I talk to every day and may even get an invite to my wedding next year (if they?re lucky/add me on Skype). This world I was unaware of only three years ago has now become the backbone to my daily life and a whole world I now can?t live without.

1. Home Photography
No matter for cats or for dogs, they are afraid of the strange environment. So, home photography is your best choice. Pets are used to living with their own master and it is easier for them to show the relax status. When you take your pets into pictures at home, you can capture the funny moments easier.

2. Be patient
For pet photography, you must need to be patient. Pets are not like human beings, they are unable to understand what you say. You should spend much on waiting. Waiting for what? You should wait for their natural actions such as the tongue, yawning, licking hairy and so on.

3. Guide your pets
Sometimes, we can take some worthy pictures of our pets when we guide them. For example, when we feed them by hand, they will lick tongue. If the dog is well trained, you can easily shoot a lot of interesting actions through the instructions such as flipping, running, jumping, catching ball and so on. This may need two people to finish the task.

4. Pay attention to the main characters of your pets.
Different pet has different characters. If you have a naughty dog, you should show his naughty and active aspect. If you have a lazy cat, you'd better show her yawning, licking hair, sleeping and so on.

5. Shooting from the view of your pets
From the internet, we can see some wonderful pet videos or photographs which seems like they have personate their pets. That's because they make videos or take photography from the view of these pets. Before photography, we should consider what the pets are thinking about. We should get down to their level and show the way they see the world.

5. Natural light
We'd better take photographs in the day because we can get natural light. We must avoid flash light because that will scare your pets. When we take photographs, the first thing we should keep in mind is that we should protect our pets. Don't forget that pet is also a member in our family.

6. Watch on the computer

Super Puma helicopter: Dramatic moment 19 oil rig workers were rescued after emergency landing

  • Super Puma helicopter ditched between Shetland and Orkney islands
  • Men on board helped on to passing cargo ship and flown to mainland
  • Helicopter was kept afloat with flotation bags until it could be taken away

This is the dramatic moment a major rescue operation began after a helicopter carrying 19 oil rig workers ditched in the sea.

Photographs of the Super Puma helicopter being kept afloat off the coast of Shetland were released for the first time today after every man was helped to safety.

Rescuers then faced a race against time to lift the aircraft into a recovery vessel before it sank.

Flotation bags had been fixed to the bottom of the helicopter, but they could only hold it up for a short period.

The aircraft was successfully loaded on to anchor-handling tug supply vessel, the Olympic Zeus, today and the vessel was on its way back to the mainland, due to arrive at Peterhead at 3.30am on Wednesday.

?

The helicopter, operated by Aberdeen-based CHC Helicopters, made an emergency landing in the sea 14 miles west of Fair Isle, between Orkney and Shetland, at about 3.30pm on Monday.

It landed about 200 metres from a ship, the Nord Nightingale, which was taking a cargo load of diesel on its way from Primorsk in Russia to Belfast in Northern Ireland.

The ship's crew went to help the oil rig workers and brought them onboard the vessel. The men were flown back to Aberdeen today.

The ship's master, Bo Rosenborg, said: 'My officer on duty alerted me to the emergency landing.

'It was very close to our ship, maybe about 200 metres behind it.

'We reduced our speed and turned around as quickly as we could and contacted the Shetland coastguard.

'It was agreed that we would try to commence the rescue operation. It was very exciting, we were all keen to see if everyone was okay.

'Once the operation got under way, everyone was calm and focused.

'We agreed to try and get the crew on board and sent out a rescue craft.

'We managed to bring all 19 passengers on to the vessel, where they were then transferred to two rescue helicopters.

'We were lucky that the weather was good, which made things easier for us. Thankfully, the controlled landing was so good that there were no injuries.'

Investigators from the Air Accidents Investigation Branch are expected to interview the helicopter's two pilots about the incident.

The Helicopter Safety Steering Group will also discuss the matter at a meeting on Wednesday.

Offshore carriers have grounded their fleets of Super Puma helicopters following the emergency.

The incident has concerned unions representing offshore workers, who today said there was 'growing fear' among members about helicopter safety.

The Unite union wants to ban the use of the 'Dacon Scoop', a net and winch device for rescuing people from the water.

Unite industrial Officer John Taylor said: 'We go into this emergency meeting of the HSSG with serious concerns about whether these aircraft are fit for purpose and to make clear our members growing fears over wider safety procedures for offshore helicopter rescue, particularly where the rescue fall-back plans involve the use of the Dacon Scoop.

'It's unacceptable to Unite and our members that helicopters should be allowed to fly where conditions are deemed so hazardous that being fished-out of the sea by a mechanical device from a rescue vessel is the last line of safety.

'Mercifully there were no fatalities with this latest incident, largely due to the skills of the pilot crew, the close proximity of the Nord Nightingale tanker in the waters off Shetland and the elements.

'They were lucky but we can't always rely on luck and we need to tighten-up industry safety standards now.'

It is the second time in seven months that the crew of the Nord Nightingale has been called out on a sea rescue.

In March it helped an injured competitor who had been taking part in the Clipper 09-10 Round the World Yacht Race.

He suffered serious head cuts after being hurled across the cabin during severe storms in the middle of the Pacific.

The Nord Nightingale, which was in the area at the time, took him on board where he was treated for his injuries.

The yachtsman's teammates then continued the race.

Obama, Romney exchange jabs on Israel, size of US military in debate

President Obama and Mitt Romney had a heated exchanges over Israel and the size of the U.S. military in their final debate, held in Florida on Monday night.

The sharpest exchanges of the evening came when Romney accused Obama of showing weakness and apologizing to the Middle East on behalf of America.

?From the very beginning, one of the challenges we?ve had with Iran ... I think they saw weakness where they expected to find American strength,? Romney said. ?And then the president began what I have called an apology tour, of going to various nations in the Middle East and criticizing America.?

Romney continued to say Obama ?skipped Israel? on his ?apology tour? and went on Middle Eastern TV and called the United States ?dismissive and derisive.?

Obama was prepared for the frequent criticism.

?This has been probably the biggest whopper that's been told during the course of this campaign,? he said.

"If we're going to talk about trips that we've taken," Obama said, "when I was a candidate for office, first trip I took was to visit our troops. And when I went to Israel as a candidate, I didn?t take donors. I didn?t attend fundraisers ... I went to ... the Holocaust museum there to remind myself of the nature of evil and why our bond with Israel will be unbreakable.?

Romney also accused Obama of allowing the military to be cut to historically low levels through $1 trillion in cuts from last year?s Budget Control Act and sequestration.

?Our Navy is smaller now than at any time since 1917,? Romney said. ?The Navy said they needed 313 ships to carry out their mission. We?re now at under 285. We?re headed down to the low 200s if we go through a sequestration. That?s unacceptable to me."

Obama responded by saying that sequestration happened because of Congress, not his administration, and that it would not happen.

Obama also pushed against Romney?s criticism over the number of ships and planes with a zinger about increases in military capabilities.

?We also have fewer horses and bayonets,? Obama said, adding that fewer ships and planes were needed with aircraft carriers and nuclear submarines.

?It?s not a game of Battleship, where we?re counting ships,? Obama said.

Romney and Obama pivoted to the economy several times during the evening.

Thirty minutes into the debate, which was designed to focus on national security and foreign affairs, both contenders brought up domestic issues on repeated occasions, indicating an awareness that the economy remains the No. 1 issue for voters.

Several times Romney tried to tie the weak economic recovery in the U.S. to America?s standing in the world.

?America must lead, and for that to happen we have to strengthen our economy here at home,? he said. ?You can?t have 23 million people struggling to get a job. You can?t have an economy that over the last three years keeps slowing down its growth rate.?

Obama, meanwhile, directly tied his opponent to the previous Republican administration.

?Both at home and abroad he has proposed wrong and reckless policies,? he said. ?He?s praised George [W.] Bush as a good economic steward and Dick Cheney as somebody who ... shows great wisdom and judgment. And taking us back to those kinds of strategies that got us into this mess are not the way that we are going to maintain leadership in the 21st century."

The president also brought up education policy, pointing out they hadn't gotten to discuss it in their previous two showdowns.

But the evening started out with Romney taking a considerably softer tone in his criticism of Obama than previous debates ? and the president took advantage of that, coming out swinging.

The first question of the night was about Libya, and Romney demurred when presented with an opportunity to slam the president over his handling of the September attack on the U.S. Consulate in Benghazi. Instead, Romney pointed to instability throughout the region, and said the U.S. should ?to help the world of Islam ... reject this radical violent extremism."

Obama pounced, first saying the United States had brought together the international community to ?liberate a country that had been under the yoke of dictatorship for 40 years,? and pointing to the ?tens of thousands of Libyans" marching to denounce the attacks in Benghazi.

?But I have to tell you,? Obama said, turning to his challenger, ?your strategy previously has been one that has been all over the map and is not designed to keep Americans safe.?

Romney countered that his position is to pursue ?the bad guys,? and noted the ?rising tide of chaos ... with al Qaeda rushing in? to fill various power vacuums.

?I?m glad that you recognize al Qaeda is a threat,? Obama said. ?Because a few months ago when you were asked what was the biggest geopolitical threat, you said Russia ... and the 1980s are now calling to ask for their foreign policy back.?

Romney shot back, saying he had qualified Russia was a ?geopolitical foe,? but that he always believed Iran was the largest threat to the United States.

?I?m not going to wear rose-colored glasses when it comes to Russia,? Romney said. ?And I?m certainly not going to tell [Russian President Vladimir] Putin that he?ll get more flexibility from the U.S. after the election, I?m going to tell him he?ll get more backbone.?

With both of the candidates seated, the debate had a more restrained feel than the previous two presidential showdowns. While their town-hall-style debate featured aggressive performances from both of them, Monday night saw the two men focused on policy and speaking in much more moderate tones.

Obama and Romney went back and forth on Iraq and Syria, although their differences were small and their arguments nuanced.

The president accused Romney of wanting to keep more troops on the ground, a position the GOP nominee said he has never taken.

?Here?s one thing I?ve learned about being commander in chief,? Obama said. ?You?ve got to be clear, both to our allies and our enemies, about where you stand and what you mean. You just gave a speech a few weeks ago in which you said we should still have troops in Iraq.?

On Syria, while both agreed President Bashar Assad?s days were numbered, Romney said Obama was allowing the United Nations to take the lead.

?Syria is an opportunity for us,? Romney said. ?Syria is Iran?s only ally in the Arab world ... so seeing Syria remove Assad is a very high priority for us ... this has been going on for a year. ... We should have taken a leading role.?

The third and final meeting of the presidential candidates took place Lynn University in Boca Raton, Fla., focusing on national security and foreign policy issues.

Romney has recently cut into Obama?s lead on foreign affairs. According to the a Washington Post/ABC News poll, Obama has a slim 49 percent to 46 percent lead over Romney on international affairs, a 47 percent to 46 lead on terrorism and a 48 percent to 45 lead on who is better equipped to manage the armed forces.

Executions increasingly viewed as torture: U.N. investigator

UNITED NATIONS (Reuters) - Countries around the world are increasingly viewing capital punishment as a form of torture because it inflicts severe mental and physical pain on those sentenced to death, a U.N. torture investigator said on Tuesday.

Traditionally, countries have considered the legality of capital punishment with respect to the right to life guaranteed under international law, U.N. special rapporteur on torture Juan Mendez told the U.N. General Assembly's human rights committee.

"My analysis of regional and national jurisprudence identifies a momentum towards redefining the legality of capital punishment," Mendez said.

"States need to re-examine their procedures under international law because the ability of states to impose and carry out the death penalty is diminishing as these practices are increasingly viewed to constitute torture," he said.

He said that there was no such thing as a pain-free form of execution, which makes it difficult to reject the idea that it is a form of torture.

"Methods of execution cannot be discounted as being completely painless," he told reporters after addressing the General Assembly's Third Committee.

In his report to the 193-nation General Assembly, Mendez said that several U.N. expert panels have urged the United States to review its execution methods, including lethal injection, to prevent extreme pain and suffering.

"Following a number of executions in the United States, it has recently become apparent that the (lethal injection) regimen, as currently administered, does not work as efficiently as intended," Mendez's report said.

"Some prisoners take many minutes to die and others become very distressed," he said. "New studies conclude that even if lethal injection is administered without technical error, those executed may experience suffocation, and therefore the conventional view of lethal injection as a peaceful and painless death is questionable."

Capital punishment is a controversial and divisive issue in the United States. Most U.S. states, as well as the federal government and U.S. military, allow executions, though some states have raised concerns similar to Mendez's.

Last month a Montana judge struck down that state's lethal injection procedure as a violation of the Montana constitution because it lacked necessary safeguards against cruel and unusual punishment, effectively suspending executions.

'CUMBERSOME AND EXPENSIVE'

Mendez criticized Iran in his report to the General Assembly for executing minors. He also condemned Tehran for hanging 10 people for drug smuggling, describing as unacceptable "the death penalty for crimes that are not even among the worst offenses.

In his report he said, "The evolving practice of States shows a clear trend towards abolition of the death penalty." However, he did not name the countries that have done so.

He urged all countries to consider abolishing capital punishment because it is "cumbersome and expensive and you're never sure you're doing it in the right way." He added that its deterrent value was questionable.

His report did not mention China, which executes more people than any other country and has been criticized by human rights groups for its execution methods. Mendez said that his report was meant to be general, though it does contain several specific examples, including the United States and Iran.

Mendez spoke about what he called the "death row phenomenon," circumstances that cause severe mental anguish and physical suffering among prisoners serving death sentences.

Such suffering, he said, includes uncertainty and anxiety caused by the imminent threat of execution, extended solitary confinement, poor prison conditions and a lack of recreational or educational possibilities.

A diplomat from Singapore, one of the countries that allows the death penalty, rejected as "deeply flawed" Mendez's suggestion that considering capital punishment a form of torture was emerging as a new widely accepted international legal norm.

"There is no evidence that the decisions Mr. Mendez has referred to have been accepted by all states as having the status of binding rules of international law," Mark Neo, a senior diplomat at Singapore's U.N. mission, said in the written text of his statement.

"Singapore certainly has not accepted them as such," he said.

Egypt also rejected Mendez's views. The U.S. mission declined to provide its statement, though Mendez said the U.S. delegation also rejected the idea that there was an emerging legal view that executions should be considered torture.

Google's latest earnings report woes to have an impact ... - PPC Hero

In case you?hadn?t?heard the big news, Google?s latest earnings report was accidentally released 4 hours early when RR Donnelly (the firm who prints Google?s financial documents) filed the reports during trading hours by mistake.

?

The big news is that almighty Google?s net profits fell 20% from last year to $2.18 billion. Investors reacted badly to the news and $22 billion was wiped off Google?s total market value overnight with shares plunging 8% ? so bad that trading had to be stopped just 20 minutes later.

Shares slumped 8% overnight

?

Is Google?s future still secure?

Well the first thing to remember is that Google is still insanely profitable and?isn?t?going anywhere any time soon ? their overall revenue grew 45% to $14.1 billion. This $2.18 billion is also still an enormous profit, particularly if you compare it to Bing?s operating loss of $1.45 billion for last year. Google?s main internet business (search engine revenue) rose 17% last year, the first time it had ever been below 20%, but still very healthy and an indication more that the market is beginning to become saturated than of things getting worse.

?

When you factor in the costs associated with Google?s $13 billion purchase of Motorola Mobility, a move designed more at protecting patents in the long term against Apple and the like, it seems less worrisome to us in PPC. The report showed Google?s Motorola division had made a $527 million operating loss on $2.58 billion of revenue. The nature of this particular earnings report release also added to the hysteria with many investors panic selling Google shares.

?

However, there were some signs of trouble looming on the horizon that might shake up PPC. First, Google announced that average click prices fell 15 per cent for paid search in the past year ? good news for advertisers, not so good for Google and investors. This news was enough to send Yahoo and Facebook?s share prices down too.

?

The main reason for this fall in average cost per click stems from the accelerating switch of many users from desktop to mobile ? an environment with generally cheaper click prices. Google?s mobile business is now generating revenue at roughly $8 billion per year, up from $2.5 billion last year.

?

So what does all this mean to us in PPC?

Expect to see Google start to push mobile advertising much more heavily in the coming year. The more advertisers on board with mobile, the higher those CPCs will rise and the more Google can mitigate the shift away from Desktop.?They?re also going to start being even more aggressive with valuing mobile optimized sites to make sure their users are getting a quality experience from mobile PPC ? get building if you haven?t already started.

Get ready for a whole lot more PPC on these things

Second, expect for cross-channel attribution modeling to become much more important to Google. The biggest issue with mobile for many of us is that it simply?isn?t?as valuable. PPC is a science and we won?t just up bids for the sake of it if they don?t offer a return on investment. What Google really needs is to be able to tell us click A from mobile led to a user researching and then heading upstairs and buying on their desktop at a later time. Without this data the murky world of direct vs. organic vs. paid search attribution will just get even harder to understand.

?

Finally look for Google to become more creative with new ideas and beta testing ? particularly on mobile. Anything they can do to increase CTRs on mobile ads will be hugely important in their next earnings report. I?m expecting them to shift towards an increased number of ads on mobile search results too, particularly on high-end devices. My Samsung Galaxy S II can happily show me more than two PPC ads without cluttering the screen so I?m sure Google will start to push even more.

?

As always let us know your thoughts on Google?s earning report and what impact you think it will have on PPC in the future in the comments below.

A diamond bigger than Earth?

LONDON | Sun Oct 21, 2012 3:58am EDT

LONDON (Reuters) - Forget the diamond as big as the Ritz. This one's bigger than planet Earth.

Orbiting a star that is visible to the naked eye, astronomers have discovered a planet twice the size of our own made largely out of diamond.

The rocky planet, called '55 Cancri e', orbits a sun-like star in the constellation of Cancer and is moving so fast that a year there lasts a mere 18 hours.

Discovered by a U.S.-Franco research team, its radius is twice that of Earth's and its mass is eight times greater. It is also incredibly hot, with temperatures on its surface reaching 3,900 degrees Fahrenheit (2,148 Celsius).

"The surface of this planet is likely covered in graphite and diamond rather than water and granite," said Nikku Madhusudhan, the Yale researcher whose findings are due to be published in the journal Astrophysical Journal Letters.

The study - with Olivier Mousis at the Institut de Recherche en Astrophysique et Planetologie in Toulose, France - estimates that at least a third of the planet's mass, the equivalent of about three Earth masses, could be diamond.

Diamond planets have been spotted before but this is the first time one has been seen orbiting a sun-like star and studied in such detail.

"This is our first glimpse of a rocky world with a fundamentally different chemistry from Earth," Madhusudhan said, adding that the discovery of the carbon-rich planet meant distant rocky planets could no longer be assumed to have chemical constituents, interiors, atmospheres, or biologies similar to Earth.

David Spergel, an astronomer at Princeton University, said it was relatively simple to work out the basic structure and history of a star once you know its mass and age.

"Planets are much more complex. This 'diamond-rich super-Earth' is likely just one example of the rich sets of discoveries that await us as we begin to explore planets around nearby stars."

"Nearby" is a relative concept in astronomy. Any fortune-hunter not dissuaded by "The Diamond as Big as the Ritz", F.Scott Fitzgerald's jazz age morality tale of thwarted greed, will find Cancri e about 40 light years, or 230 trillion miles, from Park Avenue.

(This version of the story removes erroneous reference to density of planet in paragraph four.)
