Justin Bieber Vomits On Stage (Video)

Fans in Glendale, Arizona were expecting to see a concert with their favorite teen pop star, The Biebs. What they were not expecting was to see Justin Bieber vomit on stage but that is exactly what happend during the first show of his new tour, you can see a video of the little concert interruption below. It was a big night for Justin Bielber as he kicked off his highly anticipated Believe tour and it would appear that nerves or something, perhaps Bieber fever got the best of the teen idol because mid song he threw up on stage. I know it sounds disgusting and by the looks of it from the video it was pretty disgusting. Apparently a couple of times during the show Justin had to leave the stage to get sick but one time he just couldn’t make it and well it all came out on stage for fans to see. Later after the show was over the singer sent out this Tweet “Milk was a bad choice! Lol. Great show. Getting better for tomorrow?s show”. That little explanation or whatever you want to call it was followed by a picture of The Biebs resting in bed [...]

My thoughts on Dolemite 2 the Human Tornado (1976)

Dolemite 2: The Human Tornado is pure insanity driven fun. It has the same appeal as the 1966 Batman movie where everything is so outrageous and zany the film creates a world of it's own. A world with absolutely no common sense,? logic, or even political correctness but it's strangely very fun to watch.

Rudy Ray Moore keeps the film very interesting with his charismatic performance as Dolemite, a criminal, comedian, martial arts expert who mostly speaks in rhymes. If you're in the mood for something bizarre and campy definitely check out The Human Tornado.

Scientists convert oceanic microbe data into music

Soft horns and a tinkling piano form the backbone of "Fifty Degrees North, Four Degrees West," a jazz number with two interesting twists: it has no composer and no actual musicians. Unless you count bacteria and other tiny microbes, that is.

The song is the brainchild of Peter Larsen, a biologist at the U.S. Department of Energy's Argonne National Laboratory. Larsen, it turns out, has no musical training at all; his interests run less towards the blues and more towards blue-green algae.

When faced with an avalanche of microbial data collected from samples taken from the western English Channel, Larsen recognized he needed a way to make sense of it all. "Thinking of interesting ways to highlight interactions within data is part of my daily job," he said. "I am always trying to find new ways to visualize those relationships in ways so that someone can make relevant biological conclusions."

In the case of the western English Channel data, however, Larsen decided that a visual representation of the data would not be as effective as one he could hear.

"There are certain parameters like sunlight, temperature or the concentration of phosphorus in the water that give a kind of structure to the data and determine the microbial populations," he said. "This structure provides us with an intuitive way to use music to describe a wide range of natural phenomena."

A colleague of Larsen's suggested that classical music could effectively represent the data, but Larsen wanted any patterns inherent in the information to emerge naturally and not to be imposed from without.

"For something as structured as classical music, there's an insufficient amount of structure that you can infer without having to tweak the result to fit what you perceive it should sound like," Larsen said. "We didn't want to do that."

While this is not the first attempt to "sonify" data, it is one of the more mellifluous examples of the genre. "We were astounded by just how musical it sounded," Larsen said. "A large majority of attempts to converting linear data into sound succeed, but they really don't obey the dictates of music meter, tempo, harmony. To see these things in natural phenomena and to describe them was a wonderful surprise."

According to Larsen, the musicality of the data is not limited to the organisms in the English Channel. In another set of analysis, he and his colleagues used a similar methodology to look at the relationship between a plant and a fungus.

"We expect to see the same intuitive patterns recurring in different environments," he said. "Sometimes, it can sound a little avant-garde, but it's not random because it reflects very real phenomena."

Electronics that vanish in the environment or the body

ScienceDaily (Sep. 27, 2012) ? Physicians and environmentalists alike could soon be using a new class of electronic devices: small, robust and high performance, yet also biocompatible and capable of dissolving completely in water -- or in bodily fluids.

Researchers at the University of Illinois, in collaboration with Tufts University and Northwestern University, have demonstrated a new type of biodegradable electronics technology that could introduce new design paradigms for medical implants, environmental monitors and consumer devices.

"We refer to this type of technology as transient electronics," said John A. Rogers, the Lee J. Flory-Founder Professor of Engineering at the U. of I., who led the multidisciplinary research team. "From the earliest days of the electronics industry, a key design goal has been to build devices that last forever -- with completely stable performance. But if you think about the opposite possibility -- devices that are engineered to physically disappear in a controlled and programmed manner -- then other, completely different kinds of application opportunities open up."

Three application areas appear particularly promising. First are medical implants that perform important diagnostic or therapeutic functions for a useful amount of time and then simply dissolve and resorb in the body. Second are environmental monitors, such as wireless sensors that are dispersed after a chemical spill, that degrade over time to eliminate any ecological impact. Third are consumer electronic systems or sub-components that are compostable, to reduce electronic waste streams generated by devices that are frequently upgraded, such as cellphones or other portable devices.

Transient electronic systems harness and extend various techniques that the Rogers' group has developed over the years for making tiny, yet high performance electronic systems out of ultrathin sheets of silicon. In transient applications, the sheets are so thin that they completely dissolve in a few days when immersed in biofluids. Together with soluble conductors and dielectrics, based on magnesium and magnesium oxide, these materials provide a complete palette for a wide range of electronic components, sensors, wireless transmission systems and more.

The team has built transient transistors, diodes, wireless power coils, temperature and strain sensors, photodetectors, solar cells, radio oscillators and antennas, and even simple digital cameras. All of the materials are biocompatible and, because they are extraordinarily thin, they can dissolve in even minute volumes of water.

The researchers encapsulate the devices in silk. The structure of the silk determines its rate of dissolution -- from minutes, to days, weeks or, potentially, years.

"The different applications that we are considering require different operating time frames," Rogers said. "A medical implant that is designed to deal with potential infections from surgical site incisions is only needed for a couple of weeks. But for a consumer electronic device, you'd want it to stick around at least for a year or two. The ability to use materials science to engineer those time frames becomes a critical aspect in design."

Since the group uses silicon, the industry standard material for integrated circuits, they can make highly sophisticated devices in ways that exploit well-established designs by introducing just a few additional tricks in layout, manufacturing and supporting materials. As reported in the Sept. 28 issue of the journal Science, the researchers have already demonstrated several system-level devices, including a fully transient 64-pixel digital camera and an implantable applique designed to monitor and prevent bacterial infection at surgical incisions, successfully demonstrated in rats.

Next, the researchers are further refining these and other devices for specific applications, conducting more animal tests, and working with a semiconductor foundry to explore high-volume manufacturing possibilities.

"It's a new concept, so there are lots of opportunities, many of which we probably have not even identified yet" Rogers said. "We're very excited. These findings open up entirely new areas of application, and associated directions for research in electronics."

The Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency supported this work. The Tufts University team was led by Fiorenzo Omenetto; the Northwestern University team was led by Youggang Huang. Rogers is affiliated with the departments of materials science and engineering, of chemistry, of mechanical science and engineering, of bioengineering and of electrical and computer engineering, and with the Beckman Institute for Advanced Science and Technology and the Frederick Seitz Materials Research Laboratory at the U. of I.

Pluto/Charon poses for sharpest ground-based images ever

ScienceDaily (Sep. 26, 2012) ? Despite being infamously demoted from its status as a major planet, Pluto (and its largest companion Charon) recently posed as a surrogate extrasolar planetary system to help astronomers produce exceptionally high-resolution images with the Gemini North 8-meter telescope. Using a method called reconstructive speckle imaging, the researchers took the sharpest ground-based snapshots ever obtained of Pluto and Charon in visible light, which hint at the exoplanet verification power of a large state-of-the-art telescope when combined with speckle imaging techniques.

The data also verified and refined previous orbital characteristics for Pluto and Charon while revealing the pair's precise diameters.

"The Pluto-Charon result is of timely interest to those of us wanting to understand the orbital dynamics of this pair for the 2015 encounter by NASA's New Horizons spacecraft," said Steve Howell of the NASA Ames Research Center, who led the study. In addition, Howell notes that NASA's Kepler mission, which has already proven a powerful exoplanet discovery tool, will benefit greatly from this technique.

Kepler identifies planet candidates by repeatedly measuring the change in brightness of more than 150,000 stars to detect when a planet passes in front of, or affects the brightness of, its host star. Speckle imaging with the Gemini telescope will provide Kepler's follow-up program with a doubling in its ability to resolve objects and validate Earth-like planets. It also offers a 3- to 4-magnitude sensitivity increase for the sources observed by the team. That's about a 50-fold increase in sensitivity in the observations Howell and his team made at Gemini. "This is an enormous gain in the effort underway to confirm small Earth-size planets," Howell added.

To institute this effort Howell and his team -- which included Elliott Horch (Southern Connecticut State University), Mark Everett (National Optical Astronomy Observatory), and David Ciardi (NASA Exoplanet Science Institute/Caltech) -- temporarily installed a camera, called the Differential Speckle Survey Instrument (DSSI), among the suite of instruments mounted on the Gemini telescope.

"This was a fantastic opportunity to bring DSSI to Gemini North this past July," said Horch. "In just a little over half an hour of Pluto observations, collecting light with the large Gemini mirror, we obtained the best resolution ever with the DSSI instrument -- it was stunning!"

The resolution obtained in the observations, about 20 milliarcseconds, easily corresponds to separating a pair of automobile headlights in Providence, Rhode Island, from San Francisco, California. To achieve this level of definition, Gemini obtained a large number of very quick "snapshots" of Pluto and Charon. The researchers then reconstructed them into a single image after subtracting the blurring effects and ever-changing speckled artifacts caused by turbulence in the atmosphere and other optical aberrations. With enough snapshots (each image was exposed for only 60 milliseconds or about 1/20 of a second) only the light from the actual objects remains constant, and the artifacts reveal their transient nature, eventually canceling each other out.

DSSI was built at SCSU between 2007-2008 as a part of a United States National Science Foundation Astronomical Instrumentation grant and mounted on the Gemini North telescope for a limited observing run. The instrument is likely to return to Gemini North for observations in mid-2013 for general user programs from across the international Gemini partnership. Any such arrangement will be announced along with the call for proposals for Semester 13B, in February 2013.

This work was funded in part by the National Science Foundation and NASA's Kepler discovery mission and will be published in the journal Publications of the Astronomical Society of the Pacific in October 2012.

Are You A Small Business?

The U.S. Small Business Administration has been busy finalizing rules that may alter the standards for defining a small business.

The SBA issued three final rules in the Federal Register, effective Oct. 24, 2012, increasing size standards for firms in three North American Industry Classification System (NAICS) Sectors:

  • Real Estate and Rental and Leasing
  • Educational Services
  • Health Care and Social Assistance

Size standards define the maximum size a firm can be and still be considered a small business.

The SBA said the new size standards could enable more businesses in these sectors to obtain or retain small business status. It could also give federal agencies a larger pool of small businesses from which to choose for their procurement programs. Additionally, the standards could also make more small businesses eligible for SBA?s loan programs.

SBA increased size standards for businesses in 21 industries in the Real Estate and Rental and Leasing Sector.? More than 13,000 additional firms will qualify as small under these new size standards and become eligible for SBA loan and federal procurement programs.

SBA also increased size standards for 9 industries for firms in the Educational Services Sector.? More than 1,500 additional businesses will qualify as small under the new size standards and become eligible for SBA loan and federal procurement programs.

Size standards for 28 industries were also increased for firms in the Health Care and Social Assistance Sector. More than 4,100 additional firms will qualify as small under these new size standards and become eligible for SBA loan and federal procurement programs.

To review the three rules and public comments, go to www.regulations.gov.? Each has a separate Regulation Identifier Number (RIN) number:

  • Real Estate and Rental and Leasing ? (RIN 3245-AG28)
  • Educational Services ? (RIN 3245-AG29)
  • Health Care and Social Assistance ? (RIN 3245?AG30)

The SBA issued a white paper entitled ?Size Standards Methodology? which explains how SBA establishes, reviews and modifies its receipts-based and employee-based small business size standards. The white paper is available here.

Colorado "Frozen Dead Guy" festival to go on with or without corpse

DENVER (Reuters) - The frozen corpse that has inspired a Colorado town's whimsical "Frozen Dead Guy Days" celebration may soon be put on ice somewhere else, but festival organizers said the body's removal will not have a chilling effect on the annual event.

"We will continue on whether or not Bredo Morstoel is here," festival owner Amanda MacDonald said Wednesday of the man whose body has been packed in dry ice outside Nederland, Colorado, since 1993.

A financial dispute between Morstoel's grandson, Tryve Bauge, and the man hired to replenish the dry ice on a monthly basis, Bo Shaffer, has led to Bauge threatening to move his grandfather's body out of Colorado.

Each month for 18 years, Shaffer has hauled 1,700 pounds (770 kg) of dry ice - carbon dioxide in solid form - to a remote shed above Nederland to keep the corpse of Morstoel at minus-24 degrees Fahrenheit (minus-31 degrees Celsius) and in a state of cryonic suspension.

But Shaffer said he quit after Bauge refused to pay for the rising costs of fuel and ice, which has made the endeavor unprofitable.

"It takes two of us to make the four-hour roundtrip," Shaffer told Reuters. "My quitting is the only way to get his (Bauge's) attention."

Bauge, who lives in Norway, did not immediately return an email message seeking comment about the dispute. But he told the Boulder Daily Camera newspaper that he is exploring the possibility of moving his grandfather to the Cryonics Institute in Michigan.

Cryonics is the process of freezing and storing a corpse to prevent decomposition in anticipation of medical technology that could bring the dead back to life. Liquid nitrogen, which is far colder than dry ice, is typically used for cryonic preservation.

Morstoel died of heart failure in his native Norway in 1989, and Bauge had his grandfather's body frozen and transported to a cryonics facility in California. Ultimately he had the corpse moved to Nederland, where Bauge lived at the time.

When Bauge was deported because of an expired visa, he hired Shaffer to act as an unofficial caretaker.

COFFIN RACES, HEARSE PARADE

At first, townspeople in the mountain village 17 miles southwest of Boulder, Colorado, were aghast at the thought of a frozen body being stored in their midst.

But they ultimately embraced the idea of an annual festival surrounding its most famous, albeit deceased, resident.

The late-winter celebration features activities such as coffin races, a hearse parade, a frozen salmon toss and snow beach volleyball. There are even tours to the site of Morstoel's sarcophagus, although his remains are not open for viewing.

MacDonald said the festival attracts about 10,000 people over its three-day run, which is held in early March, and has taken on a life of its own, with or without its namesake dead guy.

The nonprofit Cryonics Institute in Clinton Township, Michigan, was founded by the late physicist Robert Ettinger, who was known as a pioneer in cryonics.

His son, David Ettinger, said by telephone that privacy concerns prevent him from discussing any potential patients. However, he did say ideal candidates for suspension are people who have recently died.

Such was the case with his father, he said, who was prepared for the procedure in the days before his death in 2011 at the age of 92.

"We've never had a patient presented to us under those circumstances," he said of a corpse that has been packed in dry ice for nearly two decades.

The institute has about 100 suspended corpses, and charges a one-time $35,000 fee and $120 annually for "human cryopreservation."

Smart Outsourcing-How to Use Global Resources

Most businesses that are competing in a global economy want to realize efficiency by cutting costs while maintaining the highest levels of quality and customer service. It is not uncommon for large corporations such as AMEX, hotels.com and Citi to greenfield and outsource labor-heavy tasks such as call centers. A less common trend but still visible in many industries consists in the outsourcing of technical tasks such as coding and web development, additionally companies aspiring to expand their business to new markets utilize outsourcers for localization and translation services. Before you migrate to outsourcing strategies there are a few things to consider to be able to do smart outsourcing. The most important areas are security, quality and communication challenges.

Security Measurements

If you are going to give the outsourcer access to password secured environments such as your website or email accounts at a minimum consider hiring someone who has prior user reviews. Check their work often and once the contractor has finalized their task it is crucial that you check all the profile information to ensure it has not been changed and replace all passwords associated with their task.

Quality Standards

Standards of quality are not the same for everybody. While frontend experiences are quite binary in nature and easy to measure backend is a whole different story. It is entirely possible for a coder to come up with a solution that works well to the inexperienced eye but it presents an array of problems in terms of the way it works with all other components on the backend of your website. This area is particularly difficult to test if you lack basic knowledge. One effective workaround to this situation is to hire an additional outsourcer to conduct QA work only. Your quality assurance outsourcer can be someone with a little more experience. Because they won?t be conducting the grunt work pricing will be far more accessible.

Communication With The Outsourcer

This is perhaps the most delicate and tricky area when it comes to dealing with foreign contractors. Make sure your word choices are simple and concise. When possible provide the contractor with step by step directions making it clear how you would like for the function to work in the frontend and backend. Create mockups and be exact in terms of text selection and order of text. For example, telling a contractor that you need to capture the address of a client may not be sufficient. You will need to tell your contractor the number of fields needed, the common order of information and details such as the need for global addresses versus single country addresses. Divide the work in small units and meet often with your contractor via Skype to discuss progress. Allow the contractor to ask questions and give compassionate feedback.

One important aspect of dealing with outsourcers, which has proved very useful to us, is establishing relationships with those contractors that deliver superior results. Once you find a good one either provide them with referrals or create additional work opportunities to groom them. Be fair in payment and provide positive reviews when applicable. In general using outsourcers can save you tons of money but not without tradeoffs.

The Upside of Getting Stuck with Apple's New Maps [Navigation]

The Upside of Getting Stuck with Apple's New MapsYou're stuck on iOS 6 with no Google Maps. Apple's replacement directed you to a frog pond instead of a Walgreens, told you to cross a bridge that was actually a ditch, and refused to find several locations its Google rival found in seconds. You can't trust it and you don't want to use it, but there's an upside to all this?at least for your brain.

The Upside of Getting Stuck with Apple's New MapsThere's no defense for the crappy state of Apple's Maps, and this post certainly isn't one, but as a person stuck with navigation I can't trust I'm looking forward to actually learning how to navigate all by myself. I've lived in Los Angeles for over four years without knowing my way around because I've relied on Google to tell me where to go. Despite making attempts to become more self-reliant, I found it difficult to justify the time it took to memorize directions before leaving the house?especially when running late. A GPS crutch in your pocket makes it pretty difficult to force yourself to learn. Now, however, that same GPS encumbers your ability to navigate rather than enhances it, offering up a nice opportunity: figure it out yourself.

While Apple's navigation will lead you down the wrong path from time to time, the maps themselves often won't. If not, use any other maps app (e.g. Google Maps web app, City Maps 2 Go, etc.) to find your way around or look one up before you leave. Memorize your directions. Put a little effort into learning where you are and where you're headed. Pay attention to the road and watch for street signs more than you pay attention to what your navigation system plans to tell you next. The reward is great: you get to rely on yourself instead of your iPhone. You'll wean yourself off of your GPS dependency.

Maps matter, and Apple needs to fix the problem it introduced in iOS 6, but a solution will take time. While you wait, do things the hard way and learn. After only a few trips, I know my way across town. I'm looking forward to learning the rest.

Credit History form

The following question about the variable impact of credit inquiries to your credit scores was submitted via Mint?s Facebook page.

Do you have a credit-related question for John Ulzheimer? Head over to the Mint.com Facebook page and ask away!

Question: When applying for a mortgage, I heard you can apply multiple times within 30 days and it only dings your credit once.

Does the 30 days start on the day of the first inquiry or 30 days from the most recent inquiry?

How much does it really affect your credit to have multiple pre-approvals?

Answer: Now, I?ve certainly written about credit inquiries before and have done so for Mint on occasion. But, this question isn?t really the same as, ?What is a credit inquiry??

The reader is asking a more detailed question about how scoring systems treat certain types of inquiries over different periods of time.

It?s been my experience that this variable treatment of credit inquires is one of the most difficult things to clearly explain.

What the Minter addressed in his question is the fact that FICO scores contain complex logic that attempts to differentiate credit inquiries caused by rate shopping, versus those caused by actually opening a new credit account.

For example, you can go to a car dealership, take a test drive, and then ask the Finance and Insurance Manager to shop out your credit to see what kinds of financing offers you can get from their lender partners.

Or, you can go to several mortgage brokers and get several good faith estimates, but they all need to pull your credit reports and, therefore, leave behind a credit inquiry.

In neither scenario has the consumer actually taken on any new debt, but it appears as though they?re thinking about it.

The challenge for the credit scoring system is to account for the added risk of the consumer shopping around for credit, but at the same time not penalizing him or her for being a smart consumer who is shopping for the best deal possible.

This is accomplished by FICO?s inquiry treatment logic.

How Does It Work?

The first thing the FICO score does is determine from which industry the inquiry was generated. That is very easy because inquiries are coded at the credit bureaus by industry.

So, a FICO score, and any other credit scoring system, uses the codes to tell the difference between a mortgage, auto, student loan, credit card, insurance and every other possible inquiry.

That?s important because the following logic only applies to mortgage, auto and student loan inquiries.

Now that FICO has identified a mortgage, auto or student loan inquiry on your credit report, the next thing is to determine how old the inquiry is.

This is important for two reasons. First, inquiries of any variety that are over 12 months old no longer count in your score.

Second, if the mortgage, auto, or student loan inquiry is less than 30 days old, it is ignored and doesn?t count in your score at all.

If the mortgage, auto or student loan inquiry is less than 12 months old, but greater than 30 days old, it?s fair game and can be considered when calculating your score.

If FICO finds a ?fair game? inquiry, then the model looks for other similar credit inquiries that have occurred within the same 45-day period and treats the group as just one inquiry.

The model assumes that you?re shopping for the best interest rate and not taking out two mortgages, two auto loans or multiple student loans.

Let?s do some examples of this logic and how it works with different inquiry scenarios.

Credit Card Inquiries

If you have four credit card inquiries that occurred 14, 28, 56 and 76 days ago, how would FICO interpret them?

This is a trick question because credit card inquiries are not subject to the aforementioned logic.

So, those four credit inquiries will be counted as four inquiries because you don?t shop around for the best interest rate for a credit card like you do for a mortgage, auto or student loan.

Auto Loan Inquiries

If you have four auto loan inquiries that occurred 14, 28, 56 and 76 days ago, how would FICO interpret them?

These four inquiries would be treated as one for the calculation of your score.

Can you explain why?

The first two (occurring 14 and 28 days ago) are both less than 30 days old, so they?re ignored.

The second two (occurring 56 and 76 days ago) are within 45 days of each other, so they?re counted as only one inquiry rather than two because the assumption is you?re shopping for a loan, not taking out two car loans.

Mortgage Loan Inquiries

If you have seven mortgage inquiries that occurred 3, 5, 8, 28, 56, 76 and 370 days ago, how would FICO interpret them?

Again, the four that are less than 30 days old would be ignored. The one that?s 370 days old is older than a year and therefore ignored.

And, the two that occurred on day 56 and 76 are within 45 days of each other and are treated collectively as just one inquiry.

Whatever you may think about FICO or credit scoring, it?s hard to argue that this isn?t extremely consumer friendly.

It allows for almost untethered freedom to shop for rate variable loans without worrying much, if at all, about your credit scores.

The Mystery of Obama?s College Benefactor Revealed?

Teri_OBrien By Teri O'Brien -

On last week?s show, we stated what was painfully obvious; specifically, that the murder of our ambassador in LIbya along with 3 other Americans was a ?terrorist act,? Now the Obama administration has admitted as much, although they continue to lie about what really happened because doing so would highlight the failure of their ideologically-driven foreign policy.

Meanwhile, our buffoonish media continues to run interference for the One. They hope that by continuing to obsess over shiny objects like Mitt Romney?s recently released tax returns and his allegedly horrible comments at a May fundraiser people will stop asking about the incompetence that gave al Qaeda their biggest victory against America since 9/11.?

Earlier, at teriobrien.com, we told you about the Saudis? apparent desire to assist B. Hussein?s re-election effort by opening up their oil spigots. Perhaps they are motivated by fears about Mitt Romney?s pledge to make the U.S. energy-independent, but could there be more to it than that? What does an obscure 1979 column by a prominent black Chicago columnist reveal about the mystery surrounding Barack Obama?s college records, including the funding of his education? We are all about connecting the dots, and this blockbuster story connects them in a way you won?t hear anywhere else.

Corrupt racialist Attorney General Eric Holder somehow escapes responsibility for lying to Congress in the Fast and Furious disgrace, but in the wake of a 500+ page report from the Department of Justice?s Inspector General, two of his top deputies have resigned. Many have suggested that it?s time that Mr. Holder do the same. What say you?

Barack Obama?s statement that ?you can?t change Washington from the inside? may be true, but he proved that you can ?remake? America by imposing a government takeover of our health care system. The upcoming election presents our best, and possibly last, chance to repeal the Obamacare scheme. Our special guest, Dr. Barbara Bellar, candidate for Illinois State Senate, will share her thoughts about why it?s critical that we do so.

Tune in today for the rest of the story.

New SARS-like virus detected in Middle East

LONDON (AP) ? Global health officials are closely monitoring a new respiratory virus related to SARS that is believed to have killed at least one person in Saudi Arabia and left a Qatari citizen in critical condition in London.

The germ is a coronavirus, from a family of viruses that cause the common cold as well as SARS, the severe acute respiratory syndrome that killed some 800 people, mostly in Asia, in a 2003 epidemic.

In the latest case, British officials alerted the World Health Organization on Saturday of the new virus in a man who transferred from Qatar to be treated in London. He had recently traveled to Saudi Arabia and is now being treated in an intensive care unit after suffering kidney failure.

WHO said virus samples from the patient are almost identical to those of a 60-year-old Saudi national who died earlier this year. The agency isn't currently recommending travel restrictions and said the source of infection remains unknown.

Health officials don't know yet whether the virus could spread as rapidly as SARS did or if it might kill as many people. SARS, which first jumped to humans from civet cats in China, hit more than 30 countries worldwide after spreading from Hong Kong.

"It's still (in the) very early days," said Gregory Hartl, a WHO spokesman. "At the moment, we have two sporadic cases and there are still a lot of holes to be filled in."

He added it was unclear how the virus spreads. Coronaviruses are typically spread in the air but Hartl said scientists were considering the possibility that the patients were infected directly by animals. He said there was no evidence yet of any human-to-human transmission.

"All possible avenues of infection are being explored right now," he said.

No other countries have so far reported any similar cases to WHO, he said, and so far there is no connection between the cases except for a history of travel in Saudi Arabia.

Hartl said the first patient may have had an underlying condition but it probably didn't make him more susceptible to catching the virus.

Other experts said it was unclear how dangerous the virus is.

"We don't know if this is going to turn into another SARS or if it will disappear into nothing," said Michael Osterholm, a flu expert at the University of Minnesota. He said it was crucial to determine the ratio of severe to mild cases.

Osterholm said it was worrying that at least one person with the disease had died. "You don't die from the common cold," he said. "This gives us reason to think it might be more like SARS," which killed about 10 percent of the people it infected.

Britain's Health Protection Agency and WHO said in statements that the 49-year-old Qatari national became ill on Sept. 3, having previously traveled to Saudi Arabia. He was transferred from Qatar to Britain on Sept. 11 and is being treated in an intensive care unit at a London hospital for problems including kidney failure. Respiratory viruses aren't usually known to cause serious kidney problems.

David Heymann, chairman of the Health Protection Agency, said the new virus didn't appear that similar to SARS.

"It isn't as lethal as SARS and we don't know too much about its transmissibility yet," he said. "If people are getting infected, they aren't getting serious disease."

Heymann said it was unknown whether the virus might mutate to spread more easily in a dangerous form, since viruses mutate constantly as they reproduce. He said none of the health workers involved in treating the Qatari patient had fallen ill.

Saudi officials said they were concerned that the upcoming Hajj pilgrimage next month, which brings millions of people to Saudi Arabia from all over the world, could provide more opportunities for the virus to spread. They advised pilgrims to keep their hands clean and wear masks in crowded places.

The Hajj has previously sparked outbreaks of diseases including the flu, meningitis and polio.

A mob of hundreds of Muslim men attacked and burnt an 82-year-old church and an adjoining school in northwest Pakistan during a protest against an anti-Islam film, sparking concerns among the minority Christian community. The mob broke through the gate of the St Paul's Lutheran Church inside the cantonment in Mardan city, 48 km from the Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa capital of Peshawar, on Friday while returning from a rally against the film 'Innocence Of Muslims'. According to reports from Christians in Mardan, the mob attacked and set on fire the church, St Paul's high school, a library, a computer laboratory and houses of four clergymen, including Bishop Peter Majeed.

Suicide bomber kills 2 at Nigerian church

BAUCHI, Nigeria (Reuters) - A suicide car bomber blew himself up outside a Catholic church in a remote part of northern Nigeria on Sunday, killing himself and at least two other people and wounding several, a Reuters witness said.

Police cordoned off the area after the blast, which caused minimal damage to the church but killed at least two people in a market area of Bauchi city called Wunti. A Reuters journalist saw emergency services bring out three bodies, and police identified one as the occupant of the car that blew up.

Several wounded were being taken out on stretchers.

"I was just coming out on my way to church and I saw a car speeding towards the church entrance. It hit the fence and there was a huge 'bang' and pieces of metal flew into the air," Manan Yara, a housewife who lives opposite the church, told Reuters.

"I thank God I'm still alive," she said, her hands shaking.

National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) spokesman Yushua Shuaib said he had only confirmed reports of three wounded, with no known deaths.

"Three injured victims were rushed to the hospital for medical attention," he said.

There was no immediate claim of responsibility. Islamist sect Boko Haram has claimed several attacks on churches and other Christian gatherings this year, part of wider efforts to destabilise President Goodluck Jonathan's government.

Boko Haram has killed hundreds of people since 2009 in attacks on security forces, government offices and churches, and three of its senior members have been designated as 'terrorists' by the United States.

The sect, which says it wants to revive an ancient Islamic caliphate in northern Nigeria that would practice strict Sharia law, has become the number one security threat to Africa's top oil producer, replacing militancy in the oil-rich southeast.

A military crackdown appears to have weakened Boko Haram, whose militants have not reproduced the kind of large-scale, coordinated attacks they carried out earlier this year. At least 186 people died in attacks across the city of Kano in January.

But almost daily shootings and bombings blamed on the Islamists have continued.

The militants have made no public pronouncements since security forces said they killed their spokesman Abu Qaqa in a gun battle in Kano last Sunday.

Security analysts say Boko Haram has forged links with other Jihadist movements expanding across West Africa, such as al-Qaeda in the Islamic Magreb, an Algerian-born outfit based in northern Mali.

But apart from an attack on the U.N. headquarters in the capital Abuja last August, Boko Haram's focus has been mainly on local targets.

Trader Joe's recalls peanut butter

WASHINGTON (AP) ? The grocery store chain Trader Joe's is recalling peanut butter that has been linked to 29 salmonella illnesses in 18 states.

The Food and Drug Administration and the federal Centers for Disease Control said Saturday that the store's Creamy Salted Valencia Peanut Butter, which is sold nationwide, is the likely source of the outbreak. The agencies are investigating whether any other items sold at the store could be contaminated.

More than three-fourths of those who became ill were children under the age of 18. No deaths have been reported.

The FDA issued a statement Saturday saying that the FDA, the CDC and the state of California briefed Trader Joe's on its investigation showing the link between the peanut butter and the illnesses on Sept. 20. The company then agreed to remove the product from store shelves.

The government did not release which states had reported illnesses, but several states have issued warnings to residents not to eat the peanut butter. According to the individual states' health departments, three cases were in Massachusetts, one was in Rhode Island and one was in North Carolina.

The CDC said people became sick between June 11 and Sept. 2. Information may not be available for those who were sickened after August.

Salmonella can cause diarrhea, fever and abdominal cramps 12 to 72 hours after infection. It is most dangerous to children, the elderly and others with weak immune systems.

Israel leader says US may not act against Iran

JERUSALEM ?

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu insinuated in an interview published Friday that Israel cannot entirely rely on the U.S. to act against Iran's suspect nuclear program, a sign that the Israeli leader is not backing down from the sharp rhetoric that strained relations this week with the Obama administration.

Netanyahu has been arguing in recent weeks that Iran is getting close to acquiring nuclear weapons capability, a claim Iran denies. He has been pushing the U.S. to commit to the circumstances under which the U.S. would lead a strike on Iran's nuclear facilities. Netanyahu and other Israeli leaders have repeatedly hinted that if the United States does not attack, Israel will.

"I hear those who say we should wait until the last minute. But what if the U.S. doesn't act? It's a question that must be asked," Netanyahu told Israel Hayom, in an interview marking the Jewish New Year.

The paper, a free mass-circulation daily, is funded by Netanyahu's billionaire Jewish-American supporter Sheldon Adelson.

The Obama administration also suspects Tehran is seeks to become a nuclear power and says it is committed to preventing a nuclear Iran, but insists more efforts must be made before resorting to military action. Washington is refusing to be specific about what exactly would necessitate a strike on Iran and has rejected an Israeli demand for "red lines" that cannot be crossed.

Earlier this week Netanyahu issued a rebuke of the U.S. cautious stance, perceived as an indirect swipe at the Obama administration. He said that "those in the international community who refuse to put red lines before Iran don't have a moral right to place a red light before Israel."

Netanyahu's harsh rhetoric has drawn criticism in Israel and abroad. It even prompted a leading Jewish-American senator to take the extraordinary step of publicly rebuking him. Some have charged that Netanyahu's comments were aimed at helping his longtime friend and Republican presidential candidate, Mitt Romney, in his November election showdown with President Barack Obama.

In the interview, Netanyahu strongly rejected the claims.

"I am guided not by the elections in United States but by the centrifuges in Iran," he said. "If the Iranians were to say `stop' and cease enriching uranium and preparing a bomb until the end of the elections in the United States then I could wait."

Adding to tensions, Romney criticized Obama at a New York fundraiser on Friday for allegedly not planning to meet in person with Netanyahu on the sidelines of the upcoming United Nations General Assembly meetings later this months.

Earlier this week Obama called Netanyahu and the White House followed up the phone call with a rare late-night statement denying reports of a rift. Netanyahu's office said the two men had a "good conversation."

White House spokesman Jay Carney downplayed any signs of discord with Israel.

"The president has made clear that he is committed to preventing Iran from acquiring a nuclear weapon. We are completely in sync with Israel on that matter. There is no daylight between the United States and Israel when it comes to the absolute commitment to preventing Iran from acquiring a nuclear weapon," he said.
